So just booked our flight from Vietnam to Bangkok. Land on the 27th and have until the 17th of July to fill. Planning on going up towards the Burma border and see the River Kwai and the Tiger Temple but if anyone has any ideas of anything else worth seeing on a budget and any cheap hotels i would love to hear them.

Thanks in advance

Plenty to see and do in/around Bangkok.

As mentioned, check out Khao San road for accommodation - it's the main tourist strip. I stayed in the D&D inn, certainly one of the better options there.

Plenty of temples and palaces to visit. Worth also checking out the night market. Watch out for scammers on the street trying to shaft you out of cash with false promises of tours and telling you various sights are closed.

Wat Phra Kaeo and the Grand Palace

Wat Pho with the reclining Buddah

Wat Arun over the river

Tiger temple is indeed worth a visit from Kanchanaburi.

In terms of accomodation - check out the Lucky Jolly Frog. Really nice, relaxed on the river with a great atmosphere - might be worth to book early as it is very popular with travellers.

In addition to day trip for the Tiger Temple, the Lucky Jolly Frog also does other trips including to the River Kwai (including the Bridge, Museum etc) as well as elephant rides and the national park.

Bridge over the River Kwai

Ayutthaya, the old capital is worth a look. Day trip via train from Bangkok.

I would agree its not the greatest place in Bangkok but I suspect you'll struggle to find anywhere cheaper to stay than Khao San Road. At the end of the day its only somewhere to sleep.

That is our attitude too! Not spent more than $10 a night for rooms with a/c the whole way through India and Vietnam and we didn't plan on spending more than a few days in Bangkok itself anyway.

There are some decent and cheap hostels/budget hotels on the Sukhumvit road and also on the Khao San Rd. I found some cheaper places just off the Khao San, but found it very noisy if you actually want to sleep for a while smile

No bother, happy to help. smile

A mistake in my post - the place in Kanchanaburi is called the JOLLY Frog (not Lucky Frog). Apologies. It is certainly worth checking out as it is a very nice place (as the photos demonstrate).

I can understand the bad press regarding Khao San Road, but as mentioned - it's cheap and in a decent location. Totally touristy, loads of counterfit clothes and you'll be constantly approached with offers of 'Ping Pong Shows' but think of it as a room to sleep for a few hours and somewhere to ditch your stuff and job's a good 'un.
