What should I get now?
Discussion
I have spent the day cleaning and waxing my e46 in preperation to put it up for sale tonight.
I was pretty much dead set on getting a golf gti 1.8/2.0 NA after my idea of getting a clio 172 was crushed by my insurance company's refusal to cover me.
I thought it wouldn't be a problem to get cover on the golf as they are only group 10 insurance and are a lower BHP the my e46, but since phoning tesco today they have told me they wont cover me on one of them until i'm 21.
I'm now completely stuck for ideas, the only car I was considering and which they have said they would cover me on is the polo gti (higher insurace group and faster than a golf gti...)
Changing my insurance company isn't an option as I'm 6 months into my policy and I cant afford to lose that NCB at my age.
What would you guys reccomend as a reasonably fun car for around 2600 ( possibly with some good haggling) that I'm likely to get covered on? Also, I'm not a fan of 106s, saxos etc.

As you've discovered as a young driver the insurance groups are fairly meaningless. You should be able to get decent insurance on a saloon rather than a hot hatch (eg your E46 vs a GTi) in my youth I found the insurance on turboed Saabs was reasonable (yet were ins grp 17+) - what's wrong with your E46 anyway?
I had always planned to sell it over summer for something more sporty and thought I was best to do it now before I have to spend some money on servicing it in 1000 or so miles. Also my dad has been nagging me about getting rid of it as he never saw it as an overly sensible purchase for a 20 year old, and by me getting a smaller car it might stop him moaning for a while.

1. Change insurance companies. Yes you can afford to lose the NCB if you can't get cover on the friggin cars you want I was pretty much dead set on getting a golf gti 1.8/2.0 NA after my idea of getting a clio 172 was crushed by my insurance company's refusal to cover me.

2. Anything classics or kit will be more insurance friendly as a rule, but you'll need to speak to proper specialist insurers not just Tesco to get the deals. Remember you can get normal insurance on an older/classic car without it actually needing to be a "classic" policy.
And just for an example, I'm currently loaning my TR7 to a mate. He is only 24 with zero NCB and only had his licence for about 18 months. My 1977 TR7 V8 with a modded 3.5 litre V8 (~220hp), brake upgrade, alloys, suspension, interior mods and loads of other stuff. £700 fully comp.
Try this thread for some ideas of cars which most would consider interesting to some degree or another: http://www.pistonheads.com/xforums/topic.asp?h=0&a...

The classic route has crossed my mind, but I dont think it would be a good idea as I need a car I can use every day as well as for long distance and in all weather conditions.
Sorry, but to put it blunt - RUBBISH!Seriously, on what technical merit do you think a "classic" will be less reliable or comfy than an out of warranty newer car with loads of electronic gizmo's?

The MKIV Gti is dull to drive, not worthy of the Gti badge, I don't know why but I've owned 2. Lovely interior, not much else going for it.
What E46 are you flogging ? Surely a pokey 3 series is more fun that the Golf ?
Its a 318i. Its got a reasonable amount of poke, I kind of wanted something I could throw around a bit more though. What E46 are you flogging ? Surely a pokey 3 series is more fun that the Golf ?
I compleatly split on what to do, I've been warming to the alfa 147... but then I've heard they can be a nightmare for reliability?
Edit:
As far as classics go I had been considering either a MGB or a spitfire, what are peoples opinions on these?
