ls6 engine and box
Discussion
Ok thanks guys, i have found one in the states an ls2 with t56 £4500 plus shipping and duties so i reckon a good £6000 by the time its here, is this the sort of price i should be looking at paying? there is a damaged monaro on ebay with an ls6 i assume 2004, with t56 £6500 it would make more sense to buy that and sell the rest off!

A brand new LS3 is £5,111 inc VAT from a UK supplier. Why take the risk with a used motor if the price is so close to a new one?
Because the gearbox and clutch isnt in that price ? And what ancilliaries etc does a crate engine come with ?Although it certainly doesnt sound like a bad price at all. But if other parts are required, all those little small bits can soon add up to quite a bit of money.
How complete an engine for a swap does that price include ?

The crate engine includes filter, water pump, exhaust manifolds. You don't get an alternator, clutch, bellhousing or flywheel
what about power steering ? bracketry ? wiring ? ecu ? intake ? throttle body ? Any accesories normally attached to the fan belt, or idlers ?As I say, yes a new engine is nice, and the price isnt bad at all. But a complete cutout....will usually have all those little bits that can also easily add up to a grand or two, and thats not talking about the "get it moving" parts like clutch, flywheel, gearbox etc.
Was just reading an ad in this month's Practical Performance Car mag. from a company called Parts World Performance (www.partsworldperformance.com) who do crate engines.
They list (sans-VAT):
- crate LS3 £4350.
- accessory kit (belts, tensioners, a/c compressor, power steering pump and alternator) £734.95.
- Tremec 6-speed manual box £1995.
Go on. You know you want to!

The crate engine option does get expensive when you add on flywheel, clutch, starter, throttle body, controller, ancilaries - all of which are extras.
There are sometimes some bargains on ebay and its certainly worth keeping a lookout. I got a new LS3 for £4k, and a new T56 for £1200 off there. Its cost me another £3k for the remaining bits I needed to get a complete runner.

Throttle body and intake come with the crate engine. Obviously the other bits mount up, but there's nothing stopping you buying those second hand. You do take a leap of faith when you buy any second hand engine.
As an aside I have a spare FAST 90mm inlet manifold for LS1/6 with cathedral ports, a couple of alternators, a Corvette alt bracket, a bundle of spare coil packs, a water pump, an LS3 drive by wire throttle body and a shed load of LS6 spark plugs if anyone needs any of this stuff

True, but it can be an enormous hassle sourcing all the seperate bits, mounting bolts and fittings etc.As an aside I have a spare FAST 90mm inlet manifold for LS1/6 with cathedral ports, a couple of alternators, a Corvette alt bracket, a bundle of spare coil packs, a water pump, an LS3 drive by wire throttle body and a shed load of LS6 spark plugs if anyone needs any of this stuff
IMO, it could almost be cheaper to buy a known good engine/box, and have to spend a few quid on repairs, than buying a brand new engine with lots of missing parts.
But if bought used from a reputable seller, I dont think you'd have a lot to worry about. I'd rather buy anything for a conversion as complete as possible, as it will work out better in the long run.
If buying an engine for a replacement, then certainly a crate engine would be the way to go.
thanks for all the replies guys, but i am on a budget of around 4 to 4.5k for this, its my own car so no warranties etc..., and i totally agree with steve i want a complete a package to start with a/c pump engine mounts clutch gearlever the whole lot, no doubt i will change things over time but a solid basis to start with, a crate ls3 is good value dont get me wrong but by the time as steve has said you add gearbox and all the bits you are upto nearly 10k as much as i would love to go this way my wife would be divorcing me!, bassically i have an e34 540 touring bmw and the gearbox has gone, i am looking at around 2k for a rebuild (what!) or dropping a complete package in for a bit more and i was looking at a blower anyway, i am not mega power hungry, just a nice street driveable 400-450 bhp dead relaible package.
Being nosey as ya do.....on your website Rob.

I notice a distinct lack of any contact details lol
If budget really is tight, you could consider an iron block variant, or one of the truck based 5.3 engines. They will defo be cheaper to buy.
Ive heard a few guys use this place with success. Ive only bought one thing from them, and they were very helpful. Although I had that part shipped to another person in the US for work.

Although any of the sellers that sell worldwide and are well known, will likkely be much more expensive than if you could contact a smaller breaker in the US. But then they may not be geared up to ship worldwide as easily either.

Rob, your other big decision needs to be what ecu are you going to use. Better to use aftermarket imo although you could remap the stock ecu with efi live and buy a hot rod harness from somewhere.
A lot of basic ecu's can't read the ls1/6 trigger wheel so you'll need to fit a trigger onto the pulley and pin the pulley to the crank as a precaution.
