Hi im currently looking to buy a 206, id love a 180 however with a total budget for the car the of around about 2k only the original GTi is within my budget.

my question though is just how different are the 180 and the standard GTi?? i ask as tho i can't afford a 180 right now could i gradually mod my original GTi to be just as powerful??

im not interested in bolting on turbos or anything too daft or expensive since the car is essentially going to to be a fun alternative to my Van that i can drive round the countryside in at weekends.

so whats the score then? will an ecu remap do the trick? or will i have to start changing engine parts or even transplant a 180 engine?? any help would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers.

The original GTI only produces about 135bhp, where as the 180 produces 180bhp obviously.
They bothare 2L 16V engines. So there isnt too much difference there. But i think just a remap would be pushing it for the extra 45BHP. A few other things will more than likely need changing/adding to the engine. Also with the standard GTI the interior's very different as well. You wont get the sporty recaro seats for one. There's a few other things interior wise as well which was a significant improvement on the 180 than the standard GTI.

Hope it helps (:

Save for 6months and buy the 180 version, otherwise you will regret buying the old one. The 180 isn't too bad a car, the early models are not that good.

The normal gti is around 130bhp?? I've been told the 206 gti's are where peugeot starting going downhill with thier hot hatches.

So on that i'd recommend a 306 gti-6 or 106 gti both well within your budget.

Err.. just been reading up on this. It looks like most of the engine is different - the head is totally different, block has iron liners, crank has lots of counterweights etc etc.

Also - while reading up on the engine there was plenty of info about the rest of the car (suspension etc was all modified).

Basically, although they are both called 206 GTi and share the same shape and chassis, they have lots of differences.

180's got variable valve timing for a kick off. Engine in the 206 gti is lame (as is the car) and as suggested a 306 GTI6 is more than twice the car for less outlay.

i heard lots of owners complaining that the 180 never reaches 180 hp on the rollers either!

Good call. I've driven a fair few 206 GTI's (Only one 180 though) and universally hated them all. Buy a 306 GTI-6, a Rallye, or something like a Clio 172.

The Peugeots have the most awkward, contortionist driving position, a sloppy and indirect gearchange, numb steering and an asthmatic, soulless engine IMO. Night and day compared to a good 306. Try before you buy.

More research leads me to believe the following:

Pug themselves quote that engine as 130Kw, which is about 177ps and 174bhp.

UK Marketing and the difference between metric hp and bhp account for some of the difference.. but pug must also play a bit fast and loose with the name - it's not and never has been "180bhp".

In the rest of Europe the car was called the 206 RC, and was listed as having a peak power of 130Kw.

Nothing you said was wrong except the "not too much difference". Anyhow, I hope it helped OP.

I agree. the 180 has loads of showroom appeal but they're comparatively cr4p. as everyone else says buy a 106, 306, xsara, clio. they all have their compromises too but at least they're compromises worth making. and they're more 'weekendy'. especially a 172 cup. you never know you may be the one person who can fit in one..!

Cheers for the input guys.

Id already considered the 306 GTI-6 but to be honest iveive had 3 306's (XRDT, 1.6 XSI and HDi Dturbo) and tho i loved them i fancied a change, plus insurance is daft the cheapest quote i got was kicking the arse off £850 and getting a tidy one that hasn't been abused is like finding rocking horse st.

Cliosports are the dogs ballerics, my mate recently sold his 172cup on here but he wanted a grand more than i could afford for it which is fair given its impeccable condition had i been a bit richer id have snapped his hand clean off and wouldn't be writing this post right now and since looking at others the going rate for a tidy 172 seems to be about 3 grand its a non starter.

i should point out that i have more money than 2k but since the missus and i are saving a deposit for a house i self imposed the £2000 maximum price ceiling, since the car is going to be for casual use (Van for work/commuting) i didn't wan't to really go above it.

basically im looking for somthing thats a bit of fun that i intend to keep a long while and maybe modify.

anybody got any suggestions??
