Strange noise from rear right of car when you accelerate
Discussion
My 280i developed a strange metal on metal clank on starting out. Seems to go away or at least masked by the exhaust almost immedately. Did try coasting close to some barracades and didn't hear anything. Can't seem to find anything amiss w/o jacking it up. Only thing I can think of would be a universal joint. Does that sound right?
Not the exhaust maybe been hit recently & now shifted & touching a part of the chassis?
My 1st 400 had similar on start up when cold, but once warm I had no noise. I put it down to small movements that take place when the exhaust heats up.
Does it do it when going off/on with the power? Perhaps uj, but if they were that bad & dry presumably failure is very imminent!!

Press and release the accelerator in third when cruising at about 30-40. If you hear a click each time you press/release, it's a UJ somewhere.
They must not be too bad as I can't hear S(^^& at 30-40 except the engine.
Was hoping to look at it tonight but it is a little too hot out.Ben
I had the same but couldn't be sure that it was the UJ's so I found slight but large hill, with the engine off (keys in) rolled down . Could hear very clearly the banging noise, one side changed, still to do the other.
I tried all the perscribed routes with out any success.
You will have to post some pic's of your car now painted.

I jacked the car up, put safely on stands. Then jacked the wheel hub up so the angle was not so extreme on the UJ. Then you can move and check inner and outer UJ using the wheel as its easier than trying to turn the drive shaft by hand.
Finding UJ. You could find the size you should have and buy in the hope it was not an odd car or find somewhere local where they sell a good UJ with nipples and take the old one there complete with caps to measure up. Or if you have calipers measure yourself.

I found the best way to check the UJ's is jack up the rear of the car, pull up the handbrake, then try to move the rear wheels back and fourth whilst looking at the UJ's. You will feel and see any play.
Your need to check the prop shaft also separately I Have a knocking sound at the front of my car. I'm sure it's the exhaust knocking on the chassis. I've tried moving it myself when the car is idle but it doesn't budge.
The rear end sound could be UJs or bushes. I had a Cortina that did the same thing and found out it was a bush related problem. In cases, getting a car up on a ramp and having a good dig around is the best way to find out what the problem is....

Put it up on stands today rotated the wheel with the brake on and not much of any play at all. Actually getting a little more on the other side which makes no noise. If I rotate the wheel on the stands I do get a little clink in the outer joint every so often. Assume that means its on the way out right? If I take it to a shop how much would you expect to pay to replace all 4 rears (time estimate for a shop is fine. Can they do it on the car or do they need to come off?
