Going up to sunny Scotland today with the Family.

Decided to head up via the Al/A1M (from London) for a change.

I know there is a Aircraft museum at Newark we may stop at, we'll also be stopping off at Berwick.

Is there anything else worth visiting on the way up, as close to the A1/A1M as possible.

Cheers

don't bother with Berwick, i went there last year as we holidayed in the borders. it was tiny, overpriced and full of dole scroungers. and it always rains.

well that's the impression me and the OH got anyway.

Durham catherdral and Castle instead of Berwick (a dump) - lovely place and very historic. Alnwick Castle further North - stunning and where thyey shot some of the Harry Potter scenes if your kids are into that...

As this was my home town - The air museum was said to be the second largest private collection in the country, however it is on an old airfield on the Newark show ground. As for Newark its self, on a fine sunny day a walk along the river Trent is nice along with the remains of the castle and town museum. There a number of cafes / tea rooms on castle gate. The rest of the town has some interesting historical buildings, like the Parish church, where you can still see the cannon ball hole in the spire from the civil war.
