cycle carrier z4 coupe
Discussion
this might seem like an odd question, but does anyone here have any experience of using a cycle carrier or roof bars on either a z4 or z4m coupe?
Basically im thinking about moving from two cars (one impractical but fun, one very practical but a bit dull), to one car and the z4m coupe is looking very appealing...but one of the tasks it would need to fulfill is transporting my mtb around occasionally.

In the boot: (of the M, there is more space in the 3.0 as the battery doesnt get in the way)

Basically if you dont use the luggage blind the boot is huge, with a lot of space in the hatch bit... if that makes sence?
Have just done 3000 miles around Europe with the road bike & camping stuff in the boot and 49 bottles of wine on the way back. (to be fair i did take the seat post and forks out of the frame so it would lay flat rather than at an angle resting on the battery box)

Thanks for the post...i just looked at your link....thats quite impressive, didnt realise a bike would go in at all! I suppose my main concern would be the slight faff factor of disassembling the bike every time i want to go anywhere (lazy, I know!). Also there could be the requirement to carry 2 bikes...
i love the look of the carrier you show above (BMW official i guess?) but it is a touch on the pricey side.

paulmac - I think you and I are on the same tack in terms of rationalising from 2 cars down to one - with an eye on bike transportation - and thinking that a Z4MC would do nicely!
In terms of the faff factor, I'd suggest that bike disassembly a la custard is probably less of a chore than repeated mounting/unmounting of the BMW rack (and there aren't any third party alternatives). Also, once in motion, bike in the car is always better than bike on the car.

DAve, if you don't mind me asking, what is your current line-up? I have a diesel Leon Cupra & an elise 135R.
Both great at what they do, but due to a big decrease in commuting miles & the fact we increasingly now go away for weekends in the SEAT rather than elise, i was looking that could be both fun & practical(ish!) - Z4MC appears to tick most of the boxes. Caymen S is another option, but just seems a little too....'clinical'.
If i can get 1 bike in the boot, that is a start....we can always use g/f's mini cooper as a back-up......i know you can get 2 bike racks for those!!

Hi Paul,
Until very recently my line up was Cerbera / 330i Touring. Now I'm down to just the beemer
2 cars: one fun, one practical sounds like the perfect arrangement. Trouble is, when you're in the practical one you always wish you were in the fun one. Like you, I'm also in the position where Mrs DaveR has a vehicle that can do practical if need be. No real need for 2 practical cars in one family.
Also, the 330 was/is also my 'work' car which means that 99% of the time, there's only actually me in it (sometimes with a bike in the boot). So one smaller car that was actually more fun that I could drive ALL the time and whose only real concession to practicality was occasionally carrying a (road)bike makes sense for me.
Only fly in the ointment is that I'm currently 'between jobs'. Obviously I'd love my next gig to be one that doesn't involve mega-commuting and where a Z4MC makes perfect sense. The first priority is getting the right job though - and they're pretty few and far between at the mo.

Hi, I know what you mean about the 2 car way of life. I am in a similar boat; we have a Focus and a S2000. The S2000 is mine and is great for what I need it for and it also gets my Cannondale prophet bike on the back too! The focus is really not fun to drive.Until very recently my line up was Cerbera / 330i Touring. Now I'm down to just the beemer

I feel like selling the S2000 to get a more practical sport/coupe car so I have performance and a bigger boot and rear seats. The wife can then get something sensible like a 320i or a CRV/Kuga or something like that... best of both worlds.
I reckon if I do change the S2000 its going to be a M3/XKR. Not quite the compact sports car.. but such is life. The S2000 is a fab... maybe if the wife gets a nicer car I can make so with the S2000 and I can buy a classic car too!
