The Missus' company car goes back this week, and her new Octavia VRS has been delayed by another 2-4 weeks (vague estimate from dealer, stupidly long lead times for a new car - but that's another thread). She doesn't want to rely on Shanks' Pony to get around, nor urine stained public transport, so what do we do?

I have looked into hiring a car for a Month or so, and it's anywhere between £500-1000 depending on car. She's not fussed about what she drives in this interim period, so it would be the cheaper end of the market.

I've also looked on eBay for a runaround, but the scrappage scheme seems to have put up the prices on bangers (not sure that's still on, but prices do seem high). Having a car that might be worth something in a Month's time with minimal/no depreciation is favourable, I think, over renting a car for the Month.

So - what do you lot think? Obviously there's insurance, sorting admin fees, tax/test, possibility of being stranded but I don't like the idea of paying so much to hire a Kia Picanto!

What would be your choice to buy/sell within a Month (let's say budget is £1k - we're getting married soon and don't want to tie up too much cash) and lose less than £500?

Thanks in advance - the Red Bull's on me wink

If it was me I would scour the small ads, buy a micra for 400-750 with 12months mot and then sell it after a month

Really reliable and dirt cheap if something goes wrong, small cars are very easy to sell.

This is what my mate and I did in the same position I also bought one for my ex.

But on the flip side to the above they sell very quickly, good small cars under a grand sell within hours, so scour the ads and try and phone just as the car goes on the market.

Cheers TMM - was looking at the smaller stuff, preferably Japanese actually. I will look at the small ads in the paper etc - my reasoning being if it's less than £500 and is worth nowt at the end of the Month, we're up anyway compared to Hire Car...

Zollar - hehe

Buy a car worth about a grand if you can, and then use it for a few weeks and sell it again for a grand. Anything boring but in high-demand like a Fiesta, Corsa, etc would be what I would go for.

Total cost: zero (hopefully)
