I need opinions on whats reasonable and/or if I'm right to go and have a moan...

Our neighbours on one side are a great couple that we get on very well with. Their son is a 20 year old bum who has dropped out of uni and refuses to even try and get a job. The parents are on holiday for 4 weeks so of course it's turned into a youth club with his mates constantly round there.

I have a bit of previous with the son after having problems two years ago when they went on holiday and he got his archery stuff out. It was OK until I started finding arrows in our garden and I went round and threatend to rip his head off it it happened again. The Father fully backed me up and sold all of the lads archery kit when he got back from holiday.

For the past 10 days now we have had at least 4-5 hours a day of the football being kicked against the fence. We've been out a fair bit and away for a few days, plus they do tend to keep the noise down from 10pm onwards so I have tried to be reasonable. I've just had the wife on the phone saying that today has been the worst by far and they have spent the past hour driving the ball against the fence!

So, PH, am I fair to go and have a word with the lad and ask him to go and play football somewhere else? (the parents have a massive garden!) Or go in all guns blazing (which seems a bit OTT as it's not quite as serious as the arrow incident from before?)

Ask why he feels the need to kick it at your section of the fence and if he can kick it at another section on the other side of the garden.... politely

Isn't the fence there to stop the ball coming into your garden? It's what everyone uses them for around here.

Quiet by 10pm while the parents are away and the worst you've got to complain about is kicking a football against a wall for an hour? I think you're pretty lucky.

If it bothers you that much just ask nicely, perhaps even invite him round for a decent meal one evening at the same time so he can escape the microwaved burgers. It might encourage him to think about you a little more.

Buy sons archery kit and start taking archery lessons at his football.

ETA: When we were younger we played football outside in the road, now and then the ball went on these certain peoples garden, I'm sure they sat watching as once they ran out and grabbed the ball.. Knifed it, and threw it back.

bds, we didn't ruin the garden or cause noise except for bounce kick, bounce, kick, bounce.. And so on. mad

I would be polite about it after all he might not even realise its that much of an issue.

If he is being alright about keeping the noise down after 10 and everything else he is probably not doing it intentionally, A quiet word should have the ball away from your fence in no time.

That was a bit mean of them... but any cars on the road to be dented? Maybe the constant irritation in terms of worry got to them. Actually, for that kind of action, I'd put money on it being the case.

20 year old lads rarely think about the consequences of their actions, in virtually all situations....

Go round there and have a friendly word with him. If he gets shirty or ignores you, only then give him both barrels.

No no, thats why we played in the T junction bit of the road so there weren't any cars, and its very quiet where I live.. Most park on their drive, which these peoples house was round the other side.

They shouted everytime we had to get the ball back, we're no Beckham but not that often, so when we were bored of football and once they'd stabbed our ball they got the knockdown ginger often biggrin

hehe Then I think their actions were OTT. They probably hated the fact that you were just noisy and they wanted peace and quiet.

You obviously know him really well if you know he dropped out and refuses to get a job, so just have a polite word. Unless this is the internet and you made up the first point to get more of your internet friends to tell you to kick his back doors in.

Whenever I played football in the street, there was always the old biddy across the road watching us.

When the ball went on their garden, it was like a stare-out. Then when I'd run on the garden to get it, she'd bang on the window.

Do you fancy him?

You fancy him, don't you?

You want him.

"Kicking his ball against your fence." Euphamism.

^This, if he thinks you fancy him he will go round his mates house instead of risking bum time.
