From the official Ford pricelist:

Ford Focus 1.6 Style £17945 on the road

Ford Mondeo 1.6 Edge £17295 on the road
Ford Mondeo 2.0 Edge £17795 on the road

Thats right - the Mondeo range now starts from LESS than the Focus range. Infact, you can have a 2 litre Mondeo for less, brand new, than a 1.6 litre base model Focus.

What?

Easy

Focus production costs are higher.
Get someone into a 'higher' model an they may stay with more aspirational models.
Base spec Mondys are very base spec.

From memory a Mondeo edge is slightly better kitted than a focus style.

IMO it is to do with target markets, Mondeos are more likely to be bought by fleets or car hire firms, Foci are aimed at private buyers and often sold nearly new or ex demo at 5 or 6 k below list.

As a now ex-Ford dealer employee the current pricing structure is a total joke.

Almost as big of a joke as product lead times.

20 weeks for a Fiesta, 25 weeks for a S-Max or Galaxy.

Also, a Focus is more expensive at list than an Audi A3 or a BMW 1-series but will retain less than 30% of it's value after 3 years so it can't even compete on monthly payment terms.

Ford are driving away their established customer base - good product or not.

They've put the prices up something like 3 times in the last year or so. My girlfriend wants a fiesta zetec s, when they first came out it came to 13.5k with all the options she wanted, now the same options adds up to nearly 17k. Yes 17k for a 1.6 fiesta!! Unbelievable.

That is a joke. Ford have been putting out decent cars lately, but in the above scenario, buying new my money would only be going one way.

I had some Tarquin trying to explain the pricing structure at the start of this year.

I just about choked on my coffee when he said that Ford were competing with the BMW's and Audi's rather than Vauxhall and the such.

Errr, no.

If you want a really good laugh, spec up a Fiesta Diesel . . . . . . . I'm currently using a Zetec s TDi 3 door, as a small hatch goes, not a terrible thing, but compared to the equivalent VW obviously very cheaply produced . . . . . . . . Out of curiosity I used Fords on line configurator and came to a staggering £18,500 for a Fiesta diesel, without cruise, without Bluetooth, without climate control etc etc etc!
Not only was it far more expensive than Polo, but also more £1000 expensive than a Golf diesel with all the bits and pieces added on!

Ford upped the price of their cars, expecting that everyone would haggle, and forgot about the company cars. They've sorted that now, which is why the Mondeo is cheaper than the Focus. They've just not reduced the price of the focus yet.

And I agree it's silly money. But then Ford now have a smaller car that takes the Fiesta's place. The Mondeo is now in Scorpio territory and will be killed off in two generations at the most, it's already little more than a Focus saloon.

Surely the Mondeo is massively bigger than a Focus saloon? It's certainly far bigger than something like a 3-series which I always think of as being a little bigger than the Focus.

Ever thought that BMW / Audi are heavily discounting ATM to try and sell whereas Ford don't need to?

Supply and demand...QED.
