my sister who is currently taking GCSE exams at our local school, came home today and told me the following.
during her maths exam a pupil needed the loo, raised a hand etc, no noise made.
he asked the teacher in control of the exam for a loo break, only to be told he could not.
the kid the proceeds to wet itself, which needed mopping up after the exam had finished.
this is not the first time the school has been a touch strict with its pupils but i found (excuse the pun) that this took the pi$$!
if it where my child i'd want blood! who do they think they are?

At my University, you are not allowed to go to the toilet in the last 30 minutes of the exam, and with 35 minutes to o they will say that if you need the loo then you have to go now. I don't know if that's the same in schools nowadays, but when I did my GCSEs you were allowed to go to the toilet if you were escorted by a teacher or exam mod.

Fair play to the lad for wetting himself though, I wouldn't have had the bravery to do it!

That's ridiculous! I was allowed to go to the loo if I needed to during my end of year exams and I'm at university ffs! That's awful, I hope something is done about it, I'm sure they're not allowed to prevent children from going to the toilet?!

used to get it a fair bit when was a lad, although suspect from the crying of one girl it was the realisation that being popular did not equate to intelligence and left a large puddle on the seat / floor smile

WTF!? no need for that. I re-sat my maths GCSE last Nov (yes, what a loser...) and there were no lav restrictions. That was at the local 6th form college.

Edit..re-sat as a private candidate, i'm not 16/17/18 any longer unfortunately frown

I've not long finished exams.
We were allowed to go to the toilet.
If someone wanted to go, they were escorted to the toilet door and back...

There's no way a 16 year old lad sat and pissed his pants in front of everyone.

There is a certain time towards the end of the exam (last 20-30 minutes) where no one can leave the room, so I am guessing that it would have been in this time that he asked to go to the bathroom. I would be very sceptical that the school was disallowing toilet breaks, as surely that goes against some human rights policy or similar.

At school someone was caught in their geography exam when they stuffed notes behind the u-bend in the toilet. The teacher waiting outside heard the scrunching of paper and became suspicious...

I can't believe that, really in the modern day that can't allow a child to go to the toilet during an exam? I always thought the protocol was to take the child out, the invigilator will quickly check there's no one in the loo, quickly look around it and let the child go. No biggy, and that's what happens at our school anyway, and I'm sure the same should be true of other schools too.

Agreed. Or at the very least they could have brought a kettle into the hall for him.

Remember sitting through my GCSE's many years ago & a fellow pupil had to sit the entire exam with chewing gum all over his hair thanks to another pupil covering him in it moments before the exam started. The examiner wouldn't let him leave to clean it off.

I know of numerous instances where people have cheated in this manner.

Imo toilet breaks shouldn't be allowed, even the longest exams are only 3-4 hrs max.

The only exception is for stuff like art where the time allotted is days rather then hours- though there is far less scope to cheat in such exams anyway.

Having had my nether regions examined by ultrasound in the middle of winter, I know you can hold two litres of water for 2 hours and then some without embarrassing yourself in public. But by golly, when you're allowed to use the toilets, you do make the biggest sigh of relief you've ever made. In fact, I sighed so loudly I made myself laugh. biggrin

Edit: I've only just figured out why everyone appeared to be staring at me when I exited the toilets. They must have heard the sigh of relief. biglaugh

We allow toilet breaks in our university exams, except during the final 30 minutes. When I worked as an invigilator I always found it faintly ridiculous that it was allowed to be honest. It was by far the biggest opportunity for cheating. Who, barring medical conditions, isn't capable of holding it in for a few hours at most?
