I recall the article that Russell Bulgin wrote in CAR magazine where he took it to the Chelsea Cruise and someone poured a pint of beer over it.
How come I recall a 20yr old article but can't think of what was in the latest issue of EVO?
Because Bulgin's articles were genuinely very insightful and actually made you think a fair bit.How come I recall a 20yr old article but can't think of what was in the latest issue of EVO?
I remember him once road testing a Bentley Continental and focussing mainly on the language used in the owners manual for about a third of the test. It was utterly brilliant and told you more about the car than any hot lap of Bedford ever could
It doesn't really bother me that it's not been driven. If you wanted one to drive, there are plenty of road-registered ones but I think it's nice that there are still one or two in absolutely perfect condition. Personally, I'd get one that's been driven though.
Love that sort of advert though - they're always for 'vehicles' rather than 'cars' - it's as if the seller thinks, 'right, this car is expensive, so I better make it sound like I'm posh or nobody will buy it'. That one's a classic - all the hallmarks are there: the tortuous grammar, the Random Capitalisation, the insertion of ridiculously grandiose words/phrases that the sellers invariably spell wrong.
"It Is One Hundred And Fourty Five Miles"
"Upon there investigation it was reviled that the car had never had its Pdi Inspection"
"the service manager said because it had never had its Pdi service it should now carry a 3 year Mercedes Benz Warranty to which i never perused!"
"It is certain that you will never again have an opportunity to own such an exemplary original Mercedes Benz Evolution. This Car Will Be Of Interest To enthusiasts, collectors and investor's all over the world"
"This vehicle is exceptional, truly remarkable"
"Here is a once in a life time opportunity not to be missed to become the owner of this Very unique car"

If I won the lottery I'd buy it drive it hard :-) I don't understand this comment though - why would you not do a bit more investigating on this?:

Maybe because he didn't want to use the warranty, but IMO I would have been asking for clarification and proof this was the case. eBay said... said:

Lovely. I had an Evo I which I loved and to be frank the Evo II isn't that big a step up apart from visually of course! I've driven several and they are a bit more urgent with better handling but there is currently a frankly ludicrous price hike to the Evo II. I don't think I could bring myself to pay more than £35k for an Evo II which probably means I will never own one. Pity, great car and I agree no point having a car like this that you can't drive, better to buy one with a bit of mileage.

And such a shame that the person who buys it at that price (theres bound to be someone) will simply add it to their collection as well and not drive it either.
Understandable though - it would be silly to pay a premium for the low miles and then lose a fortune by putting thousands of miles on it. As I see it, someone wanting to drive one can save money and buy a well-used example.Although I understand the pristine appeal of keeping it like this, I do struggle to see why it's worth £100k. Most good examples are pushing it at £20k.
Also - and I'm sorry, but it needs saying - any car that isn't driven, especially one that's hardly a work of art to look at, is effectively worthless. The whole point of the 190E 16v Evo II is that it won races and the homologation special is fantastic to drive.
I'd understand this approach with a one-off Talbot-Lago by Figoni et Falaschi (and even then it'd be a crying shame if it wasn't driven at least once or twice to a few shows each year), but this is a piece of motorsport brutality. Unless it's driven - and driven hard - it is effectively pointless. And quite possibly worthless.

I can’t get on to ebay (work firewall) but if it’s not been registered already am I right in thinking that you couldn’t now? I seem to remember VW reluctantly had to register an unused Mk2 Golf GTi before new emissions legislation came in a few years ago. If I’ve got that right this is only usable on tracks or private land, which is a shame.
At the end of the day, 100 grand for a Merc 190, very funny.
I know you lot will get all misty eyed and hark back to how wonderful it was back in 1980 something but it probably hasnt stood the test of time, ok its interesting and vluable due to being effectively unused but unless you are an anal car collector who will just put it away to look at or one with enough to not give a toss and throw some miles on then its irrelevant, just about anything at 100k nowadays would make it look its age, I suspect a lot of us might not notice its supposed brilliance and just think, "wow, a very tidy Stuttgart taxi with a bodykit" just as you get dusted by a remapped Focus ST.
