Can someone please help me with a problem:

Looking to create a pool for irrigation. The cheapest way to line the pool is to buy 1 very large sheet of liner.

The largest liner is 30m x 60m (which obviously has to go down to the bottom of the pool as well as the sides).
I would like the pool to be 2m deep

How big can the pool be?
How much water (litres) will the pool carry?
Please assume straight sides and 90 degree corners for now.

Sorry maths not my strong point, please can you show workings so I can edit figures to suit. Thanks

26m x 56m at a depth of 2m. volume of 26x56x2 = 2,916 m3

Simply take off the depth x2 (for each side/end) to work out the length/width.

If you wanted it 4m deep it would be 30 - (4x2) = 22m wide by 60 - (4x2) = 52m long, volume of 4,575 m3

24x54 allowing a 2mtr height with 1mtr allowed around the top for the liner to be pegged or bricked in place.

2592000 litres of water

But im probably wrong

Agreed - take off the 3 metres from each side to account for the depths, plue 1 metre 'edging', giving you a 'base of 54m x 24m.

Not sure if you'd cut the edges and rejoin, or fold over (like wrapping a square parcel? but the sizes are the same.

Thank you for the answers - think I need to dig 2 pools as its cheaper than joining up 2 liners with a rubber weld.

Apparently the liner weights 1.6 tonnes.

It is for irrigation, so not used for swimming and it will be dug in a field !!

We have a bore hole on site which we can extract 10,000 gallons of water a day for free. We want to save up the water when not needed and then use it during the sunny spells. We will use around 20,000 gallons per day which is obviously double we can extract so we need a big storage facility.

Minus evaporation.

A deeper pool with lower surface area with evaporate significantly less. Mind you at 10,000 gallons a day it's unlikely to be an issue!

Oh, and check with planning - may or may not be needed.

You'll probably have to fence the pool, put up danger signs and rescue rings to satisfy the H&S people even if it's on private property.

Not proud to be the one to wave the H&S flag. You're not opening up a can of H&S worms by creating a deep water pool are you?

Not sure which corner of the country you're in, but we'd have some of your topsoil if you've not got better plans for it!

You realise that much water would weigh 2,592 tonnes?! Where are you planning (OP) on putting this thing?!

Edited by doogz on Tuesday 22 June 12:40
I'm guessing in Guatemala.
