Not enough detail to say for sure but they do like to destroy big end bearings.

When you say noisy is it putting out a heavy metalic knocking sound?

it is knocking, but not like a big end. the engine has only covered 25k miles (not sure of the age as i was a replacement).

Any kind of knocking is bad news. With a turbo I wouldn't want to take any risks. Unless you have a compression tester, get it towed to a garage for this to be done. Sounds to me like it may have gone lean on boost and you have suffered det. You could have a damaged valve but piston/rings are more likely. When a similar thing happened to me, the ringland fractured in two places. I was lucky as I immediately knocked it into neutral and killed the ignition. The rings held and stopped the cylinder bore suffering damage. Even so, most of the money was the labour cost of the strip and rebuild.

thanks chaps. dont think its a valve issue, so it sounds like piston issues. This will be my third spent engine in just over a year in three different cars. I dont seem to have much luck... weeping

I did drive it, but it is being picked up tomorrow morning by the garage. Fingers crossed its a quick fix, but something tells me that i am going to have to find another car for the trip.

Is it cylinder 3 that's knocking? The subaru boxer engine suffers from oil starvation on that cylinder. My money is on the bearings on that cylinder being shot.

scratchchin I've heard No.3 failures being attributed to that cylinder running the hottest and being last on the fuel rail(so getting det first if things do go wrong) but I think thats the first time I've heard it suggested that it suffers from oil starvation.

Have you checked the plugs? Not making a flippant comment; it's just easy to forget to check the simple stuff when you have an issue with your p&j and paranoia sets in!

i cant check them myself, but the garage will check them out first. i am obviously hoping that this is the only problem...
