Hi All,

A few weeks ago I accidently put petrol in my diesel company car!!! The engine wasnt started so no real damage done. Followed the company breakdown procedure and called recovery etc.

Fast forward to yesterday and I receive a bill for £230 from my employers basicaly saying pay it you were negligent. Yesterday I thought fair enough it was my own stupid fault and was prepared to pay it. However I have since found out that other company car users have damaged there car through negligence, carelesness etc and have not been asked to pay. seems a little unfair to charge me when others have not.

I also feel that should it be company procedure to make employees pay for this sort of thing there should be an obligation on them to tell me and to let me know the cost etc before starting any work or give me the opportunity to carry out or get repairs done myself and not just land a bill on my desk. Being from a motortrade background I could of got the tank drained for much much less.

Would welcome any advice or thoughts on the matter, yes I know im an idiot got putting the wrong fuel in but like I said others have done damage to there cars and not been charged

thanks

Have you posed these questions to your HR department?

If you crash, for example, do you pay the excess?
If not, I would pose this to HR.
Tell them that you are perfectly willing to pay, but that you think it is a touch harsh given that someone who has a full on crash doesn't pay anything

Company excess is £5000 for accidents. Employment terms state any amount can be recovered up to and including this amount should the employee be at fault, at the discretion of the company.

Like I said earlier my attitude was suck it up and pay it. But when others have not been charged it just dosent seem fair to me.
