Yet another post from me as my R400 arrived last Friday and I have loads of questions.
Can anyone recommend goggles or glasses for use at warp 9!!
I have a full screen but wonder if my normal sunglasses are enough to give me protection from stray chippings.
Any suggestions welcome.

Suggsetion 1: ditch the screen, it's m ouch better without it. Buy some wiley-x sg1 googles/glasses.

Alternatively keep the screen. Any glasses will be fine. I was never hit in the eye by anything with a full screen on the car. Wearing a baseball cap helps too.

I use Wiley XL-1, but they are now too expensive. There are plenty of recommendations here (Caterham and Kit cars) and on Blatchat, for cheaper alternatives.
Despite using a full screen, I have taken a hit in the lens, though this only seems to happen at lower speeds. There was a Lotus 7 Club member who recently sustained a very nasty eye injury while using a full screen when a stone smashed his contact lens.

That's interesting, I never had any issues with the full screen. Was that with the side doors on too? With the doors off there is a lot of wind buffeting round the screen. I never found that comfortable.

With the doors on, it's pretty similar to any other convertible (in this respect), so I never felt the need to add any eye protection.

I only enjoyed screenless on track with a helmet. On road I found screen and doors were more enjoyable.

I also use a helmet 99% of the time with no screen. Chapman did design it as a 'four wheeled motorbike' after all!

However for slow speed mianderings I (and any passengers) wear these: http://www.bike24.net/p212422.html

I got two pairs new from flea bay for £34

ETA... and am thinking about wearing them for the next few hours whilst I watch the football.

Search out the free 3M safety specs on General Gassing. That might be useful.

Wow, those Swiss chaps know how to mark up a 5 quid pair of safety glasses!

Free sounds good

I think I am going to go for a pair of WileyX SG-1
Any thoughts - they look cool, got a great review on the gadget show and appear to have some kind of ballistic rating for high impact. £80 seems to be the going rate. Oh and I need them for a PH run on Sunday!

That would be Ian Bruce, posts on PH under "helluvaname" - very helpful chap too, answering many of my questions over on BlatChat

I asked a similar question re goggles/glasses here: http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a... where I'd mentioned the accident Ian sustained (at that time I didn't know him/that he was also on PH)

In hindsight the ones I got aren't big enough as I have a large bridge on my nose, and the cut in, but testing them in the shop is not the same as the open road, so will need to investigate some goggles I think.

I suspect that most modern polycarbonate glasses would do the trick wouldn't they? Saying that I use a pair of Dixon glasses with interchangeable shatter-proof lenses and which come with a foam insert and elastic head-strap just like the Wiley equivalent. The cost was about £40 from uksportseyewear.

I've got some Bolle Raid goggles, which I'm just in the process of getting sorted out with prescription RX inserts, so that I can see where I'm going properly. They seem to fit well, and for me it was a choice between these, the Wileys and the Dixons. No major reason why I went with the Bolles, just took a punt on them smile

Hi Mike byebye

All I can add is ALWAYS wear some eye protection. I'd taken a chance as I couldn't find my clear lensed goggles for a night drive home of a couple of miles (full screen and sidescreens) and it led to a few trips to A&E!

I usually use one of Bobster's range www.bobster.com - have to order from USA or buy from a motorbike place when out there.

I've been Aeroscreened for years, and use nothing more then sunglasses (Adidas ClimaCool with RX inserts - work really well) and a Buff/Snood/Beanie when cold.

Never had a problem, and I've done a LOT of miles biglaugh

It's a great experience driving like this - so open, and you reall get a good 'feel' for the road, etc.

Mike's (DieterS47) is also aero'ed... we're off to the Classic on the 7th - look out for us!

Just to say thanks for all the advice. I did buy some WileyX SG-1's. First impressions were not good as the fit appeared not good. However, they are very light and comfortable and in the car they came into their own. Dont ask me why, maybe wind pressure, who knows but they were great. I wouldnt use them out of the car. Also am taking advice and getting an aeroscreen also.

I've got the full screen and doors, but much prefer driving with Dixons - there always seems to be a bit of dirt or dust that's getting in your eyes otherwise, which is a minor distraction, but if that can get in there then presumably something bigger could too.

One of these days I think might go the whole hog and get the aeroscreen too.

Goggles and glasses are light, comfortable and offer good peripheral vision. However, they do not protect all your face, so if a stone hits your mouth, they will not help. Helmets are the contrary: they protect all your head, even in case of accident, but do not have the other aforementioned advantages. Now I wonder: if protecting your cranium in case of accident is not a must, like in motorbikes, and want the best of both worlds, have you ever considered paintball masks? There are many kinds: covering just your face or your whole head, and with treatment against fogging, scratches, removable lenses, uv protection, and in general they are cheaper than helmets. They are light, let your see and hear all around, let you even wear a cap, aren't excessively warm to wear, and offer perfect eye and face protection. You may look like a psycho wearing one of these in a car, but who cares?
