Hi,
I have recently starting using R888s for track day use.I am keen to get as much use out of a pair of tyres as possible and so am interested to hear from anyone that has run these tyres once they are effectively slicks.

Once the thread has worn away leaving slick tyre,is there still a reasonable amount of laps to be had before you start seeing the canvass/thread of tyre??

Rob.

I would imagine its the amount of heat cycles they would have gone through that would be a concern

Was wondering this myself, I've got a set of R888s and didn't expect much out of them last weekend at Elvington as they were nearly slick, but they didn't miss a beat all day. At the end of the day, they were totally slick.....I wonder how many more laps they would have done...this set have done 8 track days since new (car is E46 BMW 325ci) - 1 airfield and 7 circuits - very happy with that and have a new set ready to go on now.

How many miles do you do per day? Never had more than 5 days out of a set on a 1200kg E36 328.

I'd recommend caution. The last time I tried to make a set of tired 888s last just another few laps, they delaminated quickly and I had bits of tyre flailing onto the wheel arches.

I find they take longer to heat into them when they're worn, but the same is true for any tyre I suppose.

We have smoked a few sets of 888's on the rear of the Atom and as soon as the tread goes the canvas starts to grin through on the edge of the tyre, they still give good grip though but it's time to stop when you see canvas.

Once they are slick the canvas shows in no time.

If you check out a worn, (slick) tyre, you will notice how thin the remainder of the surface is!

I once had to drive back with 4 illegal tyres.

It was only the 4th T/D on the tyres, they didn't look bad at the start of the day but it was an excellent long hard day rotate.

forgot to mention that I ran my tyres the wrong way round last Saturday to get the maximum from them, as nearside always scrub harder....no canvas showing through...but looking at those above, it can't be far off

oh and yes forgot again....two track days ago I swapped the tyres off the wheels to their oppposite side

so those two moves certainly helped their longevity I reckon
