something else... such as an XC90

Need to replace our load lugger.

Needs to travel to south of france and back in comfort at least a couple of times a year.

Need comfort and load carrying.

Looking at spending around £35k....

What does the collective think?

A6 3.0tdi Auto
SE spec with 17s or 18s rather than the Le Mans Spec (19", sports suspension) for wafty comfort.

Find one with Air Suspension if you can.

Otherwise - A8 3.0 or 4.2tdi?

Got to be the Merc for me.

I have had the 535d sport touring, A6 3.2 Quattro avant and the Mercedes E320cdi avantgarde.

The Audi is nice enough but can be a bit crashy and a little uninvolving drive wise, the interior is nice but is starting to feel a little dated, but then it is 7 years old and being replaced next year.

The 535d was an awesome all rounder if I am honest, I did 9000 miles in the first 8 weeks and then went away for a long weekend without it and the first thing I did when I got home was go for a drive, I think that says a lot about a car. The Audi would never have me going out at midnight for an hour just for the sake of it.
It was more comfy than the Audi, felt a hell of a lot smaller to drive but actually had more load space and the toys were better.
I came back from the South of France a few times in it, could leave St. Tropez at 9am and be back just in time for match of the day, I am in Norwich and it is 1001 miles from door to door, and still felt fresh.

So why the Merc?

Well it feels more direct and fun to drive than the Audi, the interior is the best of all 3, and it is more comfy than both of the others, but more than that it has a proper load space in the back, you can get loads of stuff in it.
Plus the Mercedes doesn't seem to get up peoples noses like the BMW does, and more recently the Audi too, people do let you out at junctions, they don't sit on your bumper and no one seems to make snide remarks, you can turn up in a 15 year old Merc estate anywhere and they just sort of fit in.

I would seriously consider looking at the new 5 series touring, not sure if you can order it yet??
The new 5 series is sublime to drive, the interior is probably the best I have seen from any car and it is looking a lot more subtle if that is your thing, so gets up less peoples noses.
However if you want agressive the aero kit certainly does that....

They're all good car, but the Audi is feeling a little dated now.
