I have a budget of 50k for a new car and I'm thinking;

1) Nissan GTR
2) BMW M5/M6
3) 996 TT

It will be a 3rd car, so I am looking for best all rounder for performance/handling/image (what ever that is)smile

Previous cars were TVR's and I run an S Class Merc so running costs are not an issue smile

Would appreciate ideas for other candidates

Thanks

GTR hands down for the overall package which you are looking for..

It will also be brand new (or near enough)for £50k

I agree with some of the points, if it's a car that you WON'T be using all the time, go for the Ferrari models (if you can stomach the maintenance). GTR has got space i.e. a size-able boot and 4 seats. All depends on your preferences

I was thinking the same thing a couple of years ago and did not know what I wanted. I was thinking along the lines of a F355, 550, 996GT3 etc. Felt it was inappropriate to go and get test drives for 20-30 miles and then say that I was not sure this was the car I wanted. Decided to join a car club which had most of the cars I was looking at and then drove them for 2-3 days for 300-500 miles each and really could see see what I wanted from a car. Drove all sorts from including 355,550,Gallardo (twice), NSX (twice) 4200, GTR, GT3.

My thoughts can be summed up very simply for cars at your 50K budget
GT3 or GT-R

Both very special cars but as a small note to show the effect of the GT-R it was the only car that made me laugh out loud whilst I was in the car on my own when I floored the throttle in third and into fourth having bumbled out of London on the A/M40. This was not just once but 3 times as I could not believe how fast it was on the first 2 occasions. Felt quicker and was easier to drive than the Gallardo.

Dunno what GTRs you've seen in action, but for 50k i'd be going for a GTR any day of the week.

Viscously fast in every way. And I've tried to keep up with one recently. I wasn't in my van.

Who cares about the "pootling" about thing? If you are worried about "pootling" about, buy a Yaris.

Not to everyone's taste, but:

It's rare, a genuine head-turner, seemingly depreciation proof and brutally fast due to it's lightweight tub construction and a stonking V8 4.4 up front.

I run a S class merc too and I went for the ferrari 360. True as you mention the others may be quicker, have better handling, newer etc... but nothing will come close to owning a ferrari and the experience that brings. It will make you grin ear to ear whenever you see it. And it's not as if the car is slow either! I must've only driven my S class 3 times since I got the ferrari!

Yup, just you.

When you got 50k to spend on a _performance_ car, you cease to worry about the interior of car.

GTR looks awesome from outside, and awesome when its pulling away from you at XXXmph.

But in all honesty, does the driver really play any part, at all? Talking about sub-Lewis Hamilton skill levels, I mean.

I've just enjoyed reading an old road test of the 996 GT2, and i have to say, it's not all computerised, it's not an automatic, it's not awd, but it is 460 bhp, so surely the driver has to play some part whether he likes it or not? smile

This or a new Boxster Spyder.

I'm going for a Z4 35iS myself but that's a daily driver.
