trading in...but for a cheaper car
Discussion
Before I start, I know that a private sale would be a better option...
However! I want a different car. I've had a Clio the past few years, mainly because my GF has been learning to drive and it's been cheap and easy for her to get insured and it's very easy to drive. That's all come to an end now, it's all very amicable...so far.
I want something more interesting and I have my eye on an Alfa GTV (cue the jokes). Trading in would be the easiest route for me, however the 06 plate Clio is worth more than the 99/00 GTVs I'm looking at. Do dealers do trade ins the "other way"?

I did this when I traded the Lancer for the Mondeo. Dealer got the best price he could for the Lancer, which paid off the finance. Then I paid the dealer for the Mondeo. Saved me having to sell the Lancer in the middle of the winter, during the snowy and post-Christmas time when no-one else is buying cars.

You'd be better of WBAC.com'ing the Clio... then going to the dealer with crisp, pressed £20 notes...However! I want a different car. Sell the Clio privately. We sold my girlfriends Clio through Autotrader a few months ago. Took out a 3 week ad, and it sold within 2 days for a few hundred quid more than we thought we'd get, and over double what 'we buy any car' were offering!

I bet it wasn't on 06-plate Clio...

Actually it is possible to do. And you can do it without making too much of a loss, you just have to be lucky.
I traded in an e46 bmw 318 for a jeep cherokee XJ some years back. Managed to get the going rate for the beamer, although doing this meant i couldn't negotiate on the jeep price. I probably lost myself about £500, but then save alot of hastle, for which I didn't have the time for back then. It also meant i didn't have to go for any period without a car, and had no problems with the insurance.
You just have to remember that the clio is a much much easier car for the dealer to shift, so proposition it to him that way.

I'm a car dealer and have been for a number of years and have done many a cash back deal and the customers have got a no better or worse deal. The value of the part exchange doesn't change, if it's worth 5k against a 6k car it's still worth 5k against a new Rolls!
if only all dealer's were as reasonable!Brian Fantana said:

Have you asked the dealer what deal he's prepared to offer - and has the Alfa been sat there for a while? However! I want a different car. The clio will probably be easier to sell on for him to he may not need to pull your pants down quite so far - maybe.
If you want a change anyway, why not just stick an advert in your local paper and 'price it well' in the hope someone snaps it up locally and you can have your new (older) car and some change to fill the tank?

Unless you can afford to lose your shirt and then some, I'd urge you to sell your car first and then visit some dealers with cash in hand.
