Anyone Upgraded Brakes On E39 M5?

You'll have some pretty trick SHW floating discs fitted as standard (unless swapped to single piece)
With good fluid and pads, they should improve, but you won't get a better disc than OEM if you aren't going for a bigger disc conversion.
Very true. With good fluid and pads, they should improve, but you won't get a better disc than OEM if you aren't going for a bigger disc conversion.
FWIW, I found that the aforementioned pad and fluid upgrade did wonders for braking performance on my old M3.
Unless you're tracking the car regularly (which is what I assumed the OP meant), a simple pad and fluid upgrade should be more than enough on the road - even in something as heavy as the M5.
The AP/Stoptech/Movit upgrade is very effective, but equally expensive.
As a possible halfway house between stock and a big brake kit how about the BMW performance kit for the E92 M3? It is only good for the front but there is some interesting disucssion about it on m5board http://www.m5board.com/vbulletin/e39-m5-e52-z8-dis...
Looks like a good compromise for those (like me) who can't justify the cost of a BBK but would like some extra stop.

Just be aware that it is not an E92 M3 upgrade, "only" an E92 upgrade since the diameter of the discs is smaller (338 mm IIRC v 343 mm) than the M5s. Still a worthwhile upgrade for the price, and having had a passenger ride in an M5 that was equipped with this (Frits in the M5board thread) I can guarantee that they are certainly stronger and much less prone to fade than the OEM setup.Looks like a good compromise for those (like me) who can't justify the cost of a BBK but would like some extra stop.
My old E39 M5 did a whole weekend at the Ring with no brake issues. They were standard and did grumble a little, but never failed to stop the car. Was doing comfortable mid-8 minute laps too, so not exactly hanging about. I guess it just depends on how you use them. The only "mod" that car had was the brake ducts were opened, so they were cooled pretty well. Would love AP 6-pot front and 4-pot rear as a set-up. That would be special.

well i did have 200kg of pants in the back of the car, and it was my first time at the ring. But every car ive had ive had brake issues - must be me. But even heavy use on the road i get rumble and fade, so does my M3....its a bmw thing.
only cars to defy my brake need - my old RS focus and a clio172 cup

I have not owned a car were the brakes don't fade that includes a Clio 182 and M3, cars seem pretty weak in this area......only cars to defy my brake need - my old RS focus and a clio172 cup
