Hypothetical question for you…………….

If someone was made redundant and was willing to except just about any job paying a minimum of 16K / annum in a reasonably large city in the UK, how difficult do you think it would be to find employment? Assume good oral and written communication skills and computer literate.

Well, my home city of Sunderland's (pop 300,000) local paper is always advertising jobs for call centres with wages of around £16k. Barclays call centre are always in there and, IIRC, their starting wage was over £17k.

Thanks for the replies.

I’m considering leaving my current job overseas and returning to the UK and don’t have a new job lined up. In the longer term I would obviously prefer to find a job that reflects my work experience and qualifications, however if nothing is available I would be happy to take a job doing almost anything to tide me over. The figure of 16K is the minimum I think I would need to survive without eroding my savings. The only stumbling block is that most employers will no doubt be unhappy to take on someone who only sees the job as a stop gap until something better comes along.

All the best.

Where are you going to be based, I can put you in touch with a place that will almost certainly start you on £16.5k and they will not care that you use it as a stop gap

The attrition rate in most contact centres is very high, hence the reason there're so many jobs advertised so regularly as was previously posted.

I wouldn't worry about a prospective contact centre employer being worried about you using the job as a stop gap, (don't go waving it in his face though!), I doubt he'd expect to see you there by the end of 12 months.

..besides which, you'd hardly go into the interview and say "to be honest, I'm only interested in the job to tide me over until I can find something better" when you could say "I love trying to help people, and so although I know that my previous experience isn't very relevant, I really feel I could make a positive contribution to your operation here"
