Hi all

I have a quick question for the knowledgable on here. I use a self service centre which is around 35 miles from my house, and I need to book some ramp time to do some jobs on both my Discovery and my wife's A3. The A3 (ideally) needs to be cold when I arrive as I'm changing the sump. So, I have thought about using one of these A Frame towing rigs to tow the Audi to the centre. I don't have room to store a trailer and renting one, whilst an option, is not a permanent solution.

My questions are basically:-

  • I presume, if the car is in neutral, handbrake and steering lock off, then it'll tow unnaccompanied?
  • How do the A Frames attach to the "towed" car
  • My Disco is off road prepped, so has a 2" lift - will the A Frame "raise" high enough and still tow the car?
  • Anyone recommend a good one they have used?
  • Is all this legal?

I remember hearing a while back that motorhome owners were mumbling and grumbling that rules on A-frame towing had been changed and the legality of them towing their Smart car or whatever on an A-frame behind their motorhome was now in question.

It may therefore be worth checking this.

I'm assuming said vehicle has to be taxed/mot'd/insured as it's on the road under its own weight? Or does some loophole class it as a trailor as its not moving under it's own steam?
