I was coming down the A34 yesterday and saw sort kind of BMW abortion, but don't know what it was!

It was pretty new (59 reg I think) and had a kind of X6 style back end (sloping roof/window down to boot) with a 5 series front end. It wasn't tall enough to be an X6, but wasn't small enough to be a 5 series and I didn't/couldn't see any badges on the back other than the BMW one. I was wondering if it was some kind of custom job for someone but don't know why anyone would want to mate X6 styling with anything!!

It's really bugging me what it is!! Any thoughts?

Sounds like the new series hatchback, aka 5 series GT.

My Colleague has one in France, took it for a drive:

Good points: Sat Nav is 3D and shows buildings, kinda cool.

Bad Points: Hopelessly wide! Couldn't get the thing to turn off (engine was okay but ignition still on) as I didn't know the combination of buttons to press - Very frustrating and complete technology overkill. Slow and, despite being Auto, very jerky at low speeds.

Anyhow, my mate is getting rid of it because it doesn't fit in his underground parking space (Paris) and he prefers his 2003 E class merc.

Saw one the other day. It was right on the bumper of a Q7. When the Q7 moved over and they were side by side there really wasn't much difference in height. The BMW looked wider though!

Absolutely shocking vehicle.

That is a niche vehicle for a niche that really really doesn't exist, and never will!!

Compared to it, the X6 almost looks reasonable.

Ugly indeed. Just when you thought that bangle chap had peaked in the ugly dept with the X6, and things would improve BMW decide to play their joker and trump card at the same time.

It looks to me like the rear window/hatch thingy was just added on by those scrapheap challenge blokes that found and old pick up truck with camping body on it.

The 5 GT & the shorter 7 series have the same wheelbase - 3070 mm. Which could suggest that their share their chassis.

Wheras the EU spec 2010 5 series has a mere 2888 mm wheelbase. What the wheelbase is for the new, China only longwheel base 5 series I do not know.

Apparently a 5-series and X6 mate sometimes. The offspring however, isn't life viable, and gets aborted every time.
That's what you saw.
