Is it possibly (or even legal) to hold two insurance policy's with two different companies?

You can hold as many as you like, but you cannot hold two policies on the same car. (Nor can two people hold separate policies on the same vehicle)

If you have a no claims bonus, you can only use it on one of the policies. However there is nothing to stop you building up two (or more) separate NCBs.

Some companies/brokers will mirror your no claims, always worth checking. Also i recently realised i have been insured on my Mothers car for 8 years, turns out after checking with her Ins Co that i have 5 years NCB as a named driver with them.

A friend of mine has 3 seperate policies, 2 years NCB on one and 3years+ on the other two.

Really? I was under the impression that doing this will lead to both ins companies refusing to pay out in the event of a claim.

Out of interest, the "multi car" policies that keep getting advertised on the radio are nothing of the sort. I called the most commonly advertised company up a month or two ago to get a quote on my two cars and they could only offer me two seperate policies, at a total cost of greater than I pay at the moment with two entirely different companies. There appeared to be no advantage at all to getting one company to do both cars, other than easier admin for me.

Remember though that what may not be cheaper for is for alot of other people wink

I wanted to put my son on the policy for the RX-8 when he turned 17, but my insurance company didnt want to know.
We arranged separate cover for him through another company. All organised through A Plan who were really helpfull.

For sure, but it's still not a multi-car policy. The policies aren't connected in any way at all, and it doesn't account for the fact that when I'm driving one car I'm not driving the other wink

I see, your refering to companies that say a multi car discount but the cars are on a separate policies!, my error.

That's right, yes. I've got two cars, shortly to be three, and currently have seperate policies with different companies (when you ring round companies seem to vary in how they treat different types of car). I heard the advert for "multi-car" on the radio and rung them up, only to be offered two completely seperate policies, not a single policy with "multi cars", taking into account what my present insurers don't, which is that when I'm out in one car the other one's at home in the garage, and vice versa.

I have 4 cars on 3 differnt policies. 2 are clasics on 1 policy, 1 is a kit car on its own policy and one a "normal" car. A multicar policy will only cover "normal" cars in similar insurance groups. kit cars cannot be insured as classics etc. so I end up with plenty of policies. I have even found classic policies to only bracket similar insurance groups onto one policy. sometimes classic policies are really good when you have more than 2 on 1 policy they barely charge for the 3rd or 4th car. I once insured a gt6 for the admin cost £15.
