Is their VAT on rent? ie will my rent go up in january?

ETA - after a quick google, I rent a flat to live in out of my personal money, no business involved etc.

In actual fact, there CAN be VAT on rent - although generally not on rent charged to residential tenants.

Landlords have an option to "VAT" a property which means that they will add VAT onto the rent they charge. They will normally do this if they intend to spend a lot of money on the property and want to recover the VAT on that expenditure.
You normally come across this when the property is a business premises or some other form of building which is non-residential.
