I would like to rant please on the common occurrence I have noticed on Zebra crossings where pedestrians just turn up from no-where and start walking across, causing me to suddenly slam the brakes. There seems to be no concept of pausing and waiting for vehicles who can stop in safe time to do, allowing unsafer stoppages to continue without braking. At a traffic light, you don't go from Green to Gatso in one fell swoop. I feel like a geri with this post but so be it... It's now off my chest and I can now sleep.

thumbup

Similar to what I suggested on another thread hehe Only I couldnt be arsed rigging up a secondary 'piss' bottle so they just got a face full of windscreen wash liquid.

This practice is known as 'Tashing' as you should be aiming to get the 'tash line on the victim. You can move around in your own lane to compensate for tall or short people. Not advisable when rolling upto red traffic lights.

Completely with you on this one! 90 percent of the time when this happens, and I've performed an emergency stop so his/her royal highness can leisurely stroll across, they insist on glaring at me as if I'm in the wrong. Grrrr! *shakes fist*

Agreed. But on the subject of zebra crossings. There is one I often use up the road from me, as a pedestrian. And it's blooy annoying waiting for folk to let you cross. Had a bloke on a bike today trundle down the road, could tell he wasn't stopping so didn't cross, and I saw him looking at me and gave him a sarcastic wave as he is going past and the guy flips me the bird. Cheeky bd.

And I always give people a thankyou wave or thumbs up when they let me across. Doesn't hurt to be kind once in a while.

What pisses me off with pedestrian crossings and bicycles is cyclists trundling down the pavement and then cycling across the crossing expecting the cars to stop for them. You're not a pedestrian, so fk off.

(I always do stop, but only because I can't be arsed with the legal hassles of carrying on and driving over them as I would prefer to do hehe)

When I had my driving lessons, and subsequent test some 21 years ago, I remember being told that if a padestrian sets foot on a zebra crossing, they have the right of way so to speak.

I have always abided by that rule ever since.

So if you drive up to a crossing, and they wait, it is your decision whether to stop and let them cross or not.

If you drive up to the same crossing, and they put a foot on that crossing, you are obliged to stop.

I haven't read my Highway code since I passed my test, so couldn't tell you if it is baloney or not hehe

Ive only passed my test, 3 weeks today infact. And i got told exactly the same thing in my lessons. As soon as the predestrian is off the pavement it's there right of way.

I get this a lot from old people, they look like they are going PAST the crossing for a start, then just do a 90 degree turn and carry on over the crossing without looking. Many a time I have had to either swerve (as they were nearer to my car than the distance it would have taken to stop) or slam on the anchors. Each time they have looked at me as if it was my fault.

I also had a Chav once that RAN into the side of my car, thought I had added one to the kill count for a few seconds that day.

I find it is only the ones that have never driven that do this though. IE, the older generation and then the very young generations. I do not think they realise that it is short of a miracle (as good as brakes are) to stop from 30mph in a few metres or so..

Never really had the problem that the OP mentions, however don't get me started on people who stop and have a conversation with people they've just met right on the knobbly paving stones of zebra crossings.

And the other one is - usually oiks/chavs - who walk out in the road and cross as slowly as possible.

Yes, this.

Someone I know had an oik do this one evening, showing off in front of his little girlfriends, carrying a carrier bag of food or drink or something.

So he sped up and smashed the bag of stuff out of his hand and splatted it all over the road. hehe

This.

Pretty much everyone else in this thread is a moron.

If someone crossing at a zebra crossing catches you out then you probably shouldn't be driving.

the simple fact is that if you're approaching a zebra crossing you need to look to see if anyone nearby is likely to use it and prepare to stop. The moment a pedestrian is on the crossing, the have right of way.

What about drivers who take the p**s at Zebra crossings?

There is one near my house that I use to cross a busy road. I'm always careful when using the crossing. However, there seems to be a lot of numpty drivers who do not wish to stop. I was halfway across the crossing the other day and a woman (who had seen me as we looked at each other) just couldn't be bothered to stop. She just drove straight across in front of me.

At least if you are the car driver you won't get hurt hitting someone. It's the idiotic drivers who annoy me more.

There's a zebra crossing in my local Tesco, and a friend of mine and I decided one day, to see what kind of demographic blows through the zebra crossing without stopping, even if you're on it.

9/10 times it's women. FACT!

I never really have problems as a driver with pedestrian crossings, just the jaywalking ones talked about above ^.
