Just wanted to post something to see whether anyone else has experienced this problem - I recently downgraded my mint e46 M3 to a bog standard '98 Boxster - no offence to any boxster drivers out there.

But since the change, I have had so many people I know come up to me saying..."so you upgraded to a porsche eh??" or "nice car" - I am just pretty shocked the attention to when I had the M3

The boxster is nice but no way in the same league as my old car - is it me? or does the porsche badge really carry that much weight!

PS - For those looking for a penis extension in the form of a 911, save your money and get a boxster, apparently the general public really can't tell the difference!! spin

Most of the general public will notice the badge, as they probably see more BMW's than Porsche's (and may be aware of the cost of one) they will probably instantly think its an upgrade (although IMO there is nothing wrong with either car) however a petrol head will no the difference (obviously).

Your old car was just a BMW with a big boot and rear seats. Your new car is a wow-omg-sportscar-porsche to most people!

I think it's the fact that Porsche (at least in the publics mind) only sell expensive sports and supercars.

So despite the Boxster being an entry level model, it's still prestige. Where as BMW are known (at least to the public) for building saloon cars often driven by reps and estate agents.

This is further supported by the fact that most non petrol head people can't tell an M3 from a 318, or indeed even a 760 from a 318.

Do people really say things like this? Are you not all immediately forced to stick your tongue between your bottom lip and front teeth make deep nasal moaning sounds until they walk away?

I get the same with having two cars, one of which is a Type-R. "How can you afford two cars???"

I just don't go out and get steaming drunk every thursday, friday and saturday night, like you do. Surprising how much money that costs.

I changed from a nice Audi A3 S-Line with the RS6 wheels etc, to a 2005 Boxster 3.2S to a 993 Carrera with big rims, big wing, big brakes, big exhausts (see profile pic - you get the idea)... And I found that a few people who were 'into cars' liked the Audi, but when I changed to the Boxster, all manner folk would look at it and say 'nice car' or 'flash git' depending on their point of view, but when I changed to the 993, the attention is seriously stupid. People always taking pics of it on their phones, asking about it, pointing at it, shouting stuff.. Happens wherever I go. Mental. People at work started asking me in all seriousness if I had won the lottery, despite it not costing near 'supercar' money.

So yes, I totally agree with your point about the 'badge' and the look of a Porsche attracting attention.

I also agree about the Boxster being a fantastic car. Class in every respect, better than a 911 in some ways. Loved mine.

Nice car - but the important question is what is the difference between a 29 year old DJ and any other type of DJ?!

Lol! I was just trying to provide further information about myself!
The main difference is that a 29 year old DJ fears being over 30 and being 'uncool'... biggrin
