Contacted that guy that does dive hols off here (hoping for a PH discount smile )

Anyway has anyone every been? Is it as good as they say?

Also, whats the deal with getting a visa, is it difficult? Had a look on the sudan embassy site and it mentions you need to get an letter of invitation. How does this work? Any help greatly appreciated.

It's meant to be spectacular, which, given the lack of tourists, is probably true.

We got our visa in Egypt as it's meant to be a bit of a pig getting one in the UK as an independent traveller. I'd have though the dive boat/travel firm (it's all live aboards AFAIK) would be able to sort the visa though.

Thought about it a couple of years ago but it was all staying in tents and hot and sweaty so didn't fancy it - or are you doing a liveaboard?

No help I know, but report back smile

I worked in the white Nile Valley and Kharoum, and a few mates worked on the tank farm in Port Sudan on the Red Sea, they say the diving is excellent, one of those places you go 'off a wall' and into deep water, But Sudan is a difficult place for a holiday, Khartoum airport is not easy and there are few even good hotels, the new 'easter egg' in Khartom is said to be good, but the other 4 stars, the Hilton and the Holiday Villa, which is where they stayed on the 'long way down' are very average and expensive the Sudan Pound can not be exchanged and the hotels only take US$, no credit cards are used in Sudan, the Holiday Villa was 200 US$ a night cash up front, + roome service deposit last time I stayed, and you need to get used to the land rover with the 50mm machine guna that is parked on the drive. You can also have a problem with USA visa if you have a Sudan stamp in your passport, best to loose your passport if you are planning a USA visit.
Your enrty visa only gets you to Khartoum, then you have to get a police visa to stay in the city, and then a police visa's every time you want to leave the city or travel.
