Placed and order with Dell for a lap top a few weeks ago and paid with my Amex gold card - money was taken next day and I confirmed this with Amex. One week later I call Dell to check delivery date on my PC to be told that the order is “On Hold” because of payment issues! Called Amex again who confirmed Dell really did have my money so called Dell back to see what they could do to speed up my order. Answer sweet FA!

They have a call-centre in India, a telephone receptionist in Ireland and a manufacturing plant in Bracknell UK... and between them they make damn sure you aren't going to get to talk to anybody in authority who can tell you what's going on - or for that matter put an order on the top priority list.

I'm off to the US on Monday and part of the plan was to load new software onto my new machine - fat chance now!

Today I'm trying to call/fax/e-mail the MD to see if he can do something but even his PA isn't answering her phone or responding to voice messages.

What an absolute shower - I shall be recommending a Compaq or Sony or Toshiba policy when I meet my CEO next week. Anything but Dell
Rich...

Delivered my custom built desktop system within 7 days of ordering, which was ahead of scheduled delivery.

I got my Dell 2 years ago, and I have nothing but praise. However, I didn't have any problems, so I suppose mine went through OK.

Hope you get it sorted.

Used to work there. I think you'll find they're manufacturing in Ireland and the receptionist is in Bracknell. They certainly don't manufacture in Bracknell (well hot air maybe).

Dell are basically a bank - +5 days cashflow. They get paid before they build anything.

Sorry to hear of the problems. Does sound a little unusual - keep pushing.

Is this a home or company job?

Had mixed experiences... kit is good, but service is below my expectations... in both home and company.

Ah ha, well the receptionist / telephonist has a good Irish accent bless her! So, would you know where the directors are? Apparently Angus Hegarty is the MD and Louise Carolan his PA but he's un-reachable and she doesn't respond to voice-mail despite her message saying she "will get back to you right away" Rich...

Your unfortunate experience may be the exception that proves the rule. I've bought 5 Dell desktop systems for home and 2 laptops over the past 7 years and had super service on every occasion I've called for help.

Last month one of the techs at their call center in India talked me through identification of a buzzing noise and replacement of one of the cards - and I've never even taken the side off a PC before!

I wouldn't buy a PC from anyone else - although increasingly tempted to try a Mac powerbook!!

Apologies RichB...

MESH are one of Dells competitors - www.meshcomputers.com

...just had dealings with them on a replacement PC - painless and prompt service on bespoke system with 3 year warranty - it was a toss up between them and Dell... who to be fair I have also heard good reports about.

I've always found them to be very good.

If you're going to buy from Dell clicking on the banner at the top of this page would ensure your favourite motoring website continues to enjoy warm pies.

Wonder what would happen if I placed a corporate order via the link?

I placed an Order with dell 3 weeks ago today, had the computer less than a Fortnight later, would have been less than a week but I wasn't in when Business Post tried to deliver so had to collect.

The only gripe I have is not being able to get through to the 'Internet Sales Team' on the phone, and the call centre in whereever (wasn't India though.) not putting me through to them because 'They have gone home' at 11 O'clock on a friday morning

Just bought a laptop from Dell. Had a few hiccups initially as the shipping address was different to my home address and they cancelled my order. In spite of ensuring my bank had the delivery address registered on my file. A quick call and major rant to 'Brian' in Bombay - telling him that cancelling my order was unacceptable - and 6 days later took delivery of my custom spec'ed laptop.
