Got a couple of weddings coming up, just as a bog standard seat filler - is it acceptable these days to wear a suit & shirt with no tie?

it is, but i'd say it depends a lot on the venue, age of the people getting married, and the other guests.

Personally i'd wear a tie for the service at least, you can always take it off later.

I'd go with this.

Better to turn up with one and be able to take it off, than not wear one and look under dressed.

Yep sure is.. especially if its a hot day!

But like others have said, wear a tie for the service and then you can remove after..

Yep. Tie for service and photos. Afterwards, they can be removed.

I personally hate ties, only time I've ever worn them is for funerals.

At my wedding a friend of mine who also has a similar point of view with ties asked me if he could show up without wearing one, to which I of course replied yes smile

I think it comes down to the type of wedding you are going to and if you are comfortable not wearing one. I'd suggest take one with you, wear it early on and then see how you feel. Come the reception the norm is to have it wrapped around your head as your break out your best moves!! party

Are you a chav?

do you have a medical condition affecting your neck/throat making the wearing of a tie inadvisable on medical grounds?

Unless you can answer 'yes' to one of these questions, wear a tie

Do you honestly think wearing a suit without a tie is that bad?

Don't get me wrong, I'm not having a pop, but I work in an industry where we don't need to wear suits etc and it's certainly not unusual to see suit sans tie at tradeshows etc etc

The correct answer is wear a tie - it can be removed.

the easy way of thinking of it is

"Better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it"

For work then suits without ties seems to have become fairly normal day to day, although you should really always have a tie - just in case.

Births, deaths and marriages - wear a tie, take it off later if appropriate.

Not normally.

But we had a very casual wedding, suits entirely optional. But as bride and groom it was our choice.

If the bride rocks up like this...

It probably won't matter what you wear.

Should have tie for the pics at least. One of my hubby's friends just wore a shirt and trouser, not even a nice shirt, this really showed up in the photos he was in.

We did have one friend who left his suit behind by mistake but he had a smart dark shirt and didn't look so bad but he was very embarassed not be wearing a suit.
