Was just doing some google mapping, come across a big bunch of Mansions in surrey.

Very nice places i must say. However why does every mansion / massive country house have a bloody tennis court!!

When you start making lots of money do you get this urge to go and play tennis?, so then ultimately when you get your mansion you get a court put in.

I know if i had a house like this, id have an all weather outdoor 5-7 a-side footy pitch,a well stocked lake to fish and a go kart track, but not a tennis court.

Anyone have an answer. Or is there a PH'er who actually uses their court???

For when TPT pops round I'd imagine.

Can't imagine they are very expensive to install to be honest. Bit of turf, fencing and a net. If I had the land and the cash I'd probably have one for when I got bored of the large go cart track that surrounds my perimiter.

I'd have a putting green not a tennis court.

Even better - a golf hole with tee, fairway, bunkers, water hazard and green. It could double-up as being "the garden".

So you're shelving the tennis court idea then?

Cheap to install
Cheap to maintain
Uses a bit of land but doesn't need acres (vs golf fairway and green)
You can use it fully with only two people (vs football pitch)
It is seen as very genteel (afternoon tea with a gentle game of tennis)
The cost vs asset value may be beneficial

It wouldn't be high on my list of priorities but I can see why people have them.

I have discussed requirements with the OH if we win the lottery, she said I can have a maid as long as she can have stables or a tennis court.

All my neighbours had courts, I think its more to do with the fact when these places were built it was probably the done thing to have one, and buyers are not going to remove them are they, a hard court requires little care, just keep it clean.

A few of my friends have courts despite membership at tennis clubs as it is great to get together and have a social afternoon, with an edge of competativeness that the whole family can enjoy, the ones that have the pool as well are particularly popular in the summer ;-)

I played against my father today, 80 years old and still beats me eek

Yup! Remembering, when these were built, folk never had TV and would 'do things' instead. Now replaced with the obligatory swimming pool.

I don't think they all do, but I think the new money people see it as they have made it once they have a tennis court.

The apartment I am hoping to rent has a shared tennis court, the tennis court was part of the main house for a fair few years.

All the people around me that had old style mansions that had courts, also had pools, that was also the done thing.
