A Class Servicing costs

Hi

I am considering extending the lease on my wifes A class ( new in September 08 ). This will take it to 4 years old before I hand it back, is there anything I need to be aware of eg 3year service is very expensive, gearbox oil replacement etc ?

It's touch and go whether I keep the car, at the moment it's been great, no problems under warranty, cheap to service etc but have no idea what to possibly expect in years 3 and 4.

Think your looking at about £300ish for servicing at a dealer when its 3-years old. The newer model is certainly proving to be quite a reliable car, no major problems that I am aware of.

Dealers outside London have tended to reduce service prices and it should alternate A & B service which you ought to be able to get for around £200 for an A and £300 for a B, but presumeably you've been though that for the last couple of years.

Additionally is should have the brake fluid changed every couple of years - maybe £60 or so. If it's an auto then it'll probably need the ATF needs changing at 4yrs or 37,500 miles. If it's a petrol then the plugs might need changing while you have it, but stuff like air and fuel filters etc on Mercs is at 4 year intervals unless the mileage is high.

Of course, if the car is doing relatively low mileage then you might start hitting tyre replacements, and possibly pads & disks, which you wouldn't need if the car was replaced.

I have just taken out the Mercedes service contract for £24.99 per month, which is fixed and inflation proof for 3 years. The cost includes, brake fluid change and auto gearbox fluid and filter change, which would be required during that period. I worked out that taking out the contract I would save £200 as opposed to having the car serviced at today's rates for individual menu servicing charges.

I have a CLC 180 Kommpresor. I believe the A series is the same price. Worth looking into if you decide to keep the car.

Thanks for the info, certainly given me something to think about.

I'm leaning towards keeping the car, the figures mentioned for Servicing etc are still lower than the deposit I would need to find for a new one. ( We always own one and lease one )So far has been a great car ( £100 A Service once a year, £125 to tax, £200 to insure )so will keep it I think.

Was that at an MB dealer? I've never heard of MB servicing at that price!

The service contract mentioned above might be worthwhile, especially if it is an auto and you're going to hit the ATF change point. The only thing is that I found with my car, which was on the now discontinued Mercedes ServicePlus scheme, is that the scheme administrators will only authorise the absolute bare minimum possible work.

Yes it was with an MB dealer ( Mercedes Warrington ) I called a few Independents before I called them and they were the cheapest ( also got a nice coffee when I dropped it off, and was given a lift back to the office and collected again in a new E class - the guy even carried my bags ! )

I think the B Service is around £200 ish.

The car is a manual, so I guess no worries there.

They're in the same group (Inchcape) as the dealer I use, Chester.

You're doing remarkably well with those prices - they advertise A at £165 and B at £279, and even those prices are lower than many other dealers charge:

ETA: Now my car's off ServicePlus, I'll give you a call to negotiate its next service! I've been thinking of taking it to MB Tech, but I've heard mixed reports and it's a bit of a trek for me.

Sorry I've just checked to make sure and it was £149.99 - still cheap though. Probably used man maths at the time to round it down to £100 ! Great service though, they rang up after a few days and asked did I want to test drive a B class for the weekend - should have done that to get my £49.99 back.

That's a million times better than Chester - last 2 times my car has been in I've arranged specific courtesy cars to test them and both times they didn't have the car and just shrugged.

They did make a real effort with me ( and they didn't know me ) so well done Warrington. Maybe give them a go if it's not too far, they are now just off the M6 near Thelwall.
