In light of JB poaching FA on a backmarker (vid)...

...I put this vid together last night http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gbnn5z0x7Vw , with every backmarker used to gain a race position I can remember since 1980, except for the JB one.
It used to be fairly common occurence before they brought in that 3 waved blue flags rule, or you get penalised, to help hide the developing overtaking issues in F1. Mansell was a master of it, like anything to do with overtaking.
Maybe the 3 waved flag artificialness could get removed if they ever sort out the aero? IMO overtaking a backmarker quickly is a certain skill that should be part of racing, not removed from racing.
btw, yes, the music is great. Don't advertise your musical taste problems in a motor-racing forum!

Now there's an idea! Youtube really is a git for free musical promotion... sorry, copyright. The Lauda overtakes vid took 6 bloody attempts changing the music before it was accepted! 
(Finding a half-appropriate tune and editing it in with commentary, is more time consuming than sorting the actual footage. Criminal)Anyway, was thinking of promoting the Alan Jones one to number 3. The top 3 passes would then represent overtakes that were ONLY going to happen with the use of a backmarker.
Love it myself and it's a shame the rules mean it never happens any more, apart from JB last race. Shows intelligence, planning and quick thinking to skin a competitor in this way.

No worries.Actually it only took a few hours and a few beers as I already knew what I was looking for. Most of that time was trying to find the Berger-Johansson pass at Imola 1986. I wasn't sure if I dreamt it or was remembering the wrong race, so I had to watch the whole (boring) race in full again. Fortunately my first guess was right or I'd probably still be looking for it right now.

Nige rocked... if it wasn't for him I simply wouldn't be a motor-racing fan. End. Certainly the undisputed master of the opportunist overtake using a backmarker and of overtaking in general from drafting to selling a dummy. IMO people who accused him of lacking intelligence don't fully understand what goes on in the mind of a racer or the duel of a 200mph game of chess.Did I mention ... of all time ...

With KERS likely to make a comeback next year and the new small displacement turbo engines not far behind I think we can see a bit of a return of the opportunistic pass like these. Overboost and KERs boost at the same time?
The blue flags are there to avoid cheating as much as for safety, there were far too many instances where less fortunate teams were being leaned on to hold up specific drivers. Of course no-one was admitting to it but it was somewhat obvious on track.
Any other form of racing and blue flags are pretty much unheard of - it is the responsibility of the faster driver to get past. In fact I've had a right earful from one of my fellow drivers because I got of the racing line to let a much faster pack past only to have one of them try to dodge to the other side of me just as I moved in the same direction - the joys of multi-class racing where everyone is on the track at the same time. Better still we used to run a reverse grid with the slower classes in front of the faster ones - that made for a lot of entertainment and proper overtaking!
