Its a common fault with the Diesel Mondeos. All it is, is a sprung lever with a idler pulley on the end of it. It bolts to the back of the block and holds tension onto the auxilliary belt. When they fail you can hear a loud drumming noise at idle. As soon as you raise the revs the noise should dissapear.

There was also a TSB for faulty Crank pulleys and the part number on the pulley must be checked against the ones effected in the TSB.

If left in extreme circumstances the tension wont be held against the belt and the belt can be thrown off the crank pulley. I have known the loose belts wrapping themselves around the crank pulley and then things get messy. But If you cant justify the cost at the moment it should hold out well enough just get it done if the drumming noise becomes more prominent.
