Can anyone help,I seem to have a whirring noise thats recently appeared. It only occurs when moving and gets louder with revs, not speed.

If the noise rises with the revs in each gear - check the manifold gaskets. You probably have the original gaskets made of paper which are prone to blowing - these can be changed to the later spec for about £50 for the set. Unfortunately it is a long job to replace all the gaskets.

Something stuck in the drive belt or an ancilliary such as the alternator/PAS pump or water pump maybe. My alternator sometimes whines a bit when it's hot (I think that's it).

Thanks for your input it may well be what you have suggested but i origanally thought it was something to do with the drivetrain(Gearbox/Driveshaft???). not sure though what it is??

Could be pas pump if its a 'dentist drill' ( ug ) type whirr. try hold 4000rpm in 1st and ( take it easy with this ) gently more steering left/right. See of noise gets louder and pas pump is loaded up.

Okay I'l try it tonight, however when I went out last night in it, it seemed to get worse. I'll let you know the result monday.

if its getting worse it could be a leak from reservoir on the way to pas pump, have you checked the level? You notice any small oily patches on the garage floor? When you take the lid of the reservoir it has a little dipstick thingy on it with min/max etc. They make a nasty racket when they start to suck air. Shot in the dark, but fingers crossed
