Im not too clued up on the issue so what I say may need to be confirmed by others.
It probably will have the Nikasil engine in it as it was used in the 1996 cars, I think it was February/March 1999 when they stopped.
The 528 may have had recall work done to it and the nikasil replaced with steel. Ive heard people say to look for a brass tag on the engine somewhere (I think on the right near the intake manifold). If you are still unsure a call to BMW with the reg will check if the recall work has been done.
When you view it open the door fully and look along the top edge of the door, it should remain quite still and not bounce around as the straight 6 is quite a smooth engine and a bouncy door can be a sign of engine wear.
There are a lot of differing opinions whether to still buy it or not. I personally would still buy it with a nikasil engine, aslong as it showed no engine wear.
Like I say though im not 100% on some things I have said so hopefully others can help.
