Off to France next week thinking all was sorted at long last ...but nope

The censoredbycensored wipers are playing up...reading through some past post on here I think I

have found the problem. The wheelbox under the windscreen is the culprit I think.

My helper is really going to love hearing this when he returns home tonightrolleyes

Can't see we have time to have the job done by Mr Friendly Mechanic before we go

Has anyone have a clue how long a job this is?

On a scale of 1-10 ...the helper is 5 or there a bouts..but keep that quiet bit please

This is the bit I'm struggling with confusedhehe

Wheelbox is a bit of a git to get at, at least an hour with the older-style dash, not sure about the later design... eek
May be feasible to access from engine bay if you have the rivetted cover over the heater - but I've never tried it, so don't get your hopes up!

It will be in the same location as the 350s etc. Either way you'll have to remove the entire dash to access it unless you can get at it through the engine bay which is doubtful.

Sometimes the shaft where the wiper arm bolts to can bind, can you get the wiper moving if you help it by hand? Then you can work some lube in there.

Or else (even simpler) it might be the big nut that holds the arm onto the shaft.

If all else fails get some Rain-X and don't slow down!

Jill get some Rain-X anyway, it's brilliant stuff and you'll hardly miss the wiper.

Not sure what's wrong with the wheel box but you may be able to sort it out by rotating the box to use the teeth on the other side, as only half the teeth are used. Cheers Steve.

On a 400/450 you can take it out relatively easily albeit with a few bruises, the motor is located behind the glovebox so drop the carpet holding the ECU, move ECU out of the way to access the motor. Motor is held by U clamp, unbolt this, remove wiper/arm and undo the nut holding the drive through the body. With a bit of fiddling you can draw the whole assembly out, some hoses from the heater box may need to be removed as well.
Cheers
Hamish

Thanks for all your replies.

We've now got round to trying to sort the wipers out ("we" meaning I supply the coffee and surf PH while the helper does it biggrin )
Taken the motor out and it appears that the nylon gear has alot of wear on it ... so that's why it doesn't work then rolleyes

Anybody know if there is a replacement or can it be repaired ?

By the way Hottie - had a great time at the Classic but sadly this is how our journey home ended

Oh dear - been there, done that (twice). Also striped and rebuilt the oil pump on the dockside at Calais once.

What's the problem?

Seriously, Rain-X is the gear to get. Get a big bottle and a good cleaning cloth and bingo. Don't bother with the wipers. Also gives a good impression of hyperspace as the rain gets repelled!

We use X ....I see you are in South Wales it gets a little damp there at times I guess laugh

same here but not as often.. but you have the advantage of open roads so the wet stuff floats away.

Creeping along in heavy traffic at 20mph and below it don't work..

Rain X gets my vote. I drove from Kent to Glasgow last month and most of it was in heavy rain and I didn't use the wipers unless we were driving slowly (under 30mph).

It might be the wheelbox that gives you the extra rotation. Can you get wheelboxes with less teeth on the wheel?
