Yep, it's a male and female talking to each other.

Concurred.

It's a territorial thing as well as a mating call (depending on the species)

I thought it was just one owl. I've had an "argument" with an owl or two as well and they fairly jabber away with towit and towoo (sp?).....

Two Owls are playing pool. One says 'twoits', the other says, 'twoits twoo?'.

True. Spend a couple of minutes and you'll see both hooting at each other weighing up the chances of a feathery fk.

Does than mean I've been chatting up our feathered friends when I am "calling" back to them?

Seen similar in Herring Gull pairs. He does a 'squawk' and she immediately replies.

Think it's more about shouting abuse at their feathered neighbours than talking to each other though. wink

I think it depends on the season.

In winter, all I ever hear are males "hoo hoo hooo hoo ha hoo" - ing at one another in assertion of territorial rights.

Do the same and they'll answer back, which is quite entertaining, until they start scrapping on your roof. irked

Specifically, it's a pair of Tawny Owls. One does the Twit, the other does the Twoo.

I haven't a clue. It's the blow in your hands thing I learnt when I was a scout..........

No owls have thus far turned up with a rose or a box of chocolates.....
