I am really struggling with this one - who buys chips set up for one car and then puts them on their own car? I cant see why anyone would do this? Surely you are asking for trouble and your car could run like a dog? Particularly if trying this one on a standard 4.5 with long induction.

It does say what the chip was used on, so if you fit it to a car with a different spec then it's your own fault. For someone looking to fit that variety of short induction, but struggling with the cost of a mapping session it's not that daft. Get the chip, fit it, take it to a Cerb tuner with rollers to check it's a safe map for the car and you're done. It's not the optimal path but it could work.

Still struggling a little with that one - maybe I am just a perfectionist? If one is inclined to tune ones car then I say do it properly, if you cant afford it leave it alone and save your money for important stuff?

I agree, I wouldn't go that way either, but I've seen plenty of "do I have to get the car mapped when I fit short induction" threads. I expect this chip would appeal in that situation.

When Track car solutions was still going they offered a generic chip to give more power, rather than the 'safe' one that comes with the short pipes now. It was removed from the range a while before they closed up.
I noticed it had gone because I was thinking about getting one as a stop gap till I got around to stripping the engine. I didn't want to pay for two mapping sessions - pre & post rebuild with a few mods.
Any one know why they were stopped, I'd guess the reason would apply to why one shouldn't get this chip from eBay?

I don't think I'd want a chip that had been mapped to suit a specific car as it is likely to have been set up to run as lean and advanced as is sensibly possible in order to make good power. However, I really can't see any reason at all not to run a well developed generic map which leaves some margin for error - ie one that isn't pushing the boundaries for advance and mixture, after all, that is what every car manufacturer does.

Particularly in the case of the 4.5 which is generally accepted to have been pretty poorly mapped from the factory, a good generic map seems like a reasonable halfway house.

Me. laugh

At the end of the day it's all about airflow. A 4.5 engine is going to flow pretty much the same amount of air give or take a bit. I have 4 versions that I have tried.

Std TVR map
Emerald with a 400hp ish map on
TCS generic whirlwind
TVR Power 420 hp Red Rose map

None of them hurt the car apart from maybe the Emerald as the low speed part throttle mapping is a little mismatched for my car. None of them induce knock at all so the ignition is safe and I'd say the richest of the lot is the generic whirlwind map which came out at 10:1 AFR on TDI's hub dynos.

I'm sticking with the 420 Power chip at the mo as it is certainly the best one of the bunch until I get time to work on the Emerald map.

It cost me £23 too. hehe

Ridds, what power did you get with the 420 chip? Is that with short induction? Is the rolling road comparable to the bench mark of SRR / Joolz?

Not RR'd that one yet but midrange torque even with short induction is much improved, top end feels better also.

Car currently runs short induction and modified entry std and exhaust manifold, got a set of green air filters and carbon filter cans to fit next although they look a little restrictive around the filters. Will have to see how they fair against the possibly also restrictive standard filter.

Hi Ridds, was your 420 power chip a generic one (do they sell them?) or one just like the one in the add?
Just thinking about it, I'd have thought I chip mapped on a red rose with their higher CR should give knock if used in a normal 4.5. Are you saying you found this not to be the case?

Joolz stopped the generic chips because people would put them on their cars and wouldnt see the performance improvements they expected - really down to existing out of tune issues and remedial work being required. So really underlines the need to enssure a proper remap is done.

Why would an engine with a higher CR and thus retarded ignition give knock? wink If you skimmed your heads to create a RR and ran it on a standard map then you;d likely find this but not the other way around.

Opps getmecoat maybe I should stick to body work & blowing up old vw engines...
Out of interest Ridds, how did you check for knock? With a good ear or do you have some kit? I've got a Phomula KS-3 in the other motor, Ive thought a few time it may be fun to try it out on the Cerb.

That makes sence about Joolz Gazzab, there was me thinking in a cynical way it was because they were too good & no one was paying out for proper remaps wink
