Hardtail For £300

Right, I'm off to Aberystwyth Uni in September and need a bike. I did a bit of Dirtjumping in the past, as well as the standard XC kind of stuff, but after getting my 2006 Hardrock Sport nicked last year (I loved that bike), I've made do with my dad's 2007 Hardrock Sport as and when I used it, which hasn't been much I have to admit.
Now, West Wales has some decent trails, and it's something I'd like to get back into. Anyway, here are my criteria:
1) Hardtail - never liked the feel of FS bikes to be honest.
2) Less then £300, though can push that a little for the right bike.
3) Second hand is fine.
4) V-brakes prefered to mech discs.

I bought a Trek 4300 at the beginning of the year. It has front lock out etc but no disk brakes and cost around £370, I've done a few hundred miles on it.

It's been a good commuter but the front shocks seized in the wet weather/salt (I freed them up by spraying some lube on them) and now there is slight lateral movement from taking some use which means they clonk slightly as you come to a stop, they are not pukka quality shocks by any stretch of the imagination but the lock out is quite useful. Being a hardtail it skips about a fair bit on climbs if the terrain is uneven and you are putting the power down but the tyres it's sold with are like nobly balloons .
It is not as light weight as I'd like but it seems quite tough, I haven't been gentle with it but at the same time I haven't used it for anything like large jumps etc and it seems to hold up well with a lump like me sat on it.
Anyway.. this is basically my experience of paying £3-400 on a bike, it aint perfect but it's useable and tbh I think the old rule - you get what you pay for - really does apply to bikes. Looking at the models which go for £3k, and even though £300 is actually a lot of money to me, it's really just pocket change in bike terms so don't expect too much bike for that money.
