Hi,

I've been on the hunt for a daily driver for a while now. Spotted one I liked on Auto Trader on Monday advertised by a trader in Wakefield. Phoned up about it and spoke to the guy.

I told him how interested I was in buying the car and that I had the full cash amount waiting, and asked him how soon I could come down to see it (with a view to buying). The earliest that suited him was apparantly tomorrow (ie Saturday), despite my offering to come down the day after my phone call (ie this Tuesday past), and also stating that I could come down any day this week.

So we agreed that I'd come down on Saturday to see and buy it because that suited him best. I phoned him again on Tuesday to get details for the HPI check and arrange my insurance, and once again confirmed that I would definitely buy the car if it was as described. He asked me to phone him tonight to confirm that I was still coming down tomorrow.

So as he requested, I have just phoned him, only to be told "Sorry, i've just sold the car to someone else today". So despite my paying for the full HPI, arranging insurance and agreeing to buy the car he's gone and sold it to someone else on a day that apparantly didn't suit him for me to come and view the car .

I understand that money talks, and that from his point of view there was a chance I might not have turned up tomorrow, which is fair enough. However, what pisses me off is that I could have easily gone down on any day this week to buy it, but it supposidly didn't suit him. Seems like he already had a buyer lined up and I was his 1st back-up buyer. Shame he couldn't have been honest and said "I've got a viewing lined up on Friday, but you're welcome to view the car on Saturday if it falls through". Then I wouldn't have a problem with the situation.

If you get this agitated over a HPI check Christ knows what you'll be like when you come to buy a house.

Just noticed the thread title had been re-named. I guess naming and shaming isn't allowed on here.

Apologies if this is the case - never realised.

He had someone else interested in it before you called him up. He didn't tell you that or you would have shopped elsewhere.
Unfortunately the other party bought the car, leaving you frustrated......welcome to buying used cars!!

Maybe couldnt see you until Sat as had other people coming to see beforehand , although if thats the case could have said, but then if he did, you arrive on Saturday with cash knowing others haven't bought and drive the price down.... who knows. The joys of buying from traders.

I arranged to see a car once. Was late and entered the street with the car I was coming to see going the opposite way, white smoke pouring from the exhaust as its brains were revved out. Address where I was meant to see the car was an empty house the trader was claiming was his home...

Yeah I guess so.

I've bought two used cars before and never had any problems - seems like i've just been extremely lucky up to now.

You paid it up front and now they won't refund you?

I don't think paying for insurance before you have even looked at the car was the best move. Thats not something I'd do, you might have got there and realised its a total shed with lots of problems etc.

Exactly, why HPI and insure before going to see it. Waste of money.

The insurance was for the day only for me to driver it home, so wasn't that much of a financial burden, but does add to the sour taste. I didn't take the risk of transfering the current policy I have for me current car onto this one I was going to buy because I knew it was a risk.

The reason I HPI'd it and sorted insurance prior to viewing it was because the car was 240 miles away, and unfortunately that was the closest car of this type to me. As you'll no doubt understand, I didn't realish the thought of doing a 480 mile round trip just to view a car without bringing it home on the same day.

I'm nearing my wits end - have looked for several different types of cars to try and find some close to home, but cannot find anything.

I didn't realise it was that far away! Makes sense to HPI first then but the insurance can be done over the phone in 5 minutes.

Trader was a bit of git doing that but as you already said he's probably thinking you might not show up or buy the car. He could have called you as soon as he sold it though rather than waiting for you to call frown

What sort of thing are you looking for / budget/ location. PH is great at sniffing out 2nd hand cars for people.

You're right about the insurance, however, I always like to arrange it in advance so I have a cover letter with me to show the police should I be pulled over. A mate of mine arranged his insurance over the phone once and didn't wait for the cover letter only to be pulled by the police and was done for not having any insurance - his insurer, despite debiting the money from his account, hadn't started his cover for him!

I'm based in Glasgow, and I'm looking for a decent sized diesel hatchback/estate to carry snowboard/bikes on the weekends. I've been looking at Audi A4s, BMW E46 tourings, Mazda 6's etc etc. My budget is around £4K. Yes, there are some of these for sale in Scotland but two are definitely a scam, and the other few are dogs.

Cheers

That's because 99% of the buying public are wkers as well, in the opinion of most traders.

Understandable if you've ever sold a car privately and had every ahole in the country waste your time.

You want a car, get it viewed and get the cash down before anyone else. It's the only way.

You are a dork mate serious. You dont arrange insurance cover on a car you dont own. And you seriously cant expect a garage to hold a vehicle without a deposit. You realise most garages get about ten phone calls a week like yours?. They dont know you from Larry, and were probably going along with you in the hope youd f**k off, seriously those of us in the motor trade have seen and heard it all before.. Your insurance story holds no water either. You dont need a cover note to prove cover to plod they already know if the vehicles insured, (on rare occasions a delay can occur with insurance details going on the police database, but its rare). The cover note is normally sent first class post same day in the post. The insurer will quite clearly ask 'when do you want the policy to start?', including a time, so thats when your cover is effective from. Simple.

Possibly so, but the wkers in the general public are the ones keeping the traders in a living. Biting the hand that feeds you is not a clever idea.
