Speed Camera Detectors
Discussion
I've been looking around for the last few evenings now, and I can't seem to find any really good systems.
I now travel around 65 miles a day and just want to be covered for the odd van/laser that might be hiding. There are 2 fixed cameras, but as I know the position, they aren't really a big deal.
It really just is a piece-of-mind device.
I've been looking at the Snooper 3Zero or Snooper S5-R, however many sites say that devices like the Escort and Valentine are the ones to go for, but I really don't want to be spending more than £150.
Any recommendations or advice is welcome.

I am not sure about which detectors would be the best for you but I do know from other threads on here that the bumper mounted ones are preferable. Try and get one where the laser detector is as close to your numberplate as possible (as this is where the police aim the laser)
A laser beam is a lot more targeted and so a laser detector on your dash will not always pick up a laser being pointed at you unless it is from a large distance away...That being said, if the officer targets your windscreen, then the lower detector would be useless aswell! however, the guidance is that they aim for your numberplate so you have a higher chance of a hit if its placed here.
On top of this you need to make the decision as to if you would like one that blocks the laser from taking its first speed reading. These pretend to be Garage door openers, so when they detect a laser signal they turn on and scatter a jamming signal infront of them which makes the laser detector return an error. At home this scatter of laser signals would open your garage door.
The problem with these though is that, although legal, you would have to have a good reason for having one fitted if you were stopped. (Ie, own a garage door that opens when it recieves the signal from your laser detector) If you didn't, then you could be up for perverting the course of justice.
HTH in some way

Laser detectors are nigh on pointless, there have been countless tests and the performance has been mediocre at best. The detector works by alarming you when it detects the laser, by then the copper already has your speed. The ideology behind them is that when a laser is fired, it splinters according to the surface it comes into contact with, glass fractures a laser quite effectively, it is these splinters of the laser that the detector is trying to detect, so a car 3 or 4 in front rather than you. Unfortunately the use of various laser technology in todays society means that the chance of false alarms can be chronic. Not to mention that as soon as the UK police fully bring the LIDAR system in, your detector will be useless!
A much better bet would be one of the self updating real-time GPS systems such as the Road Angel.

If you get TT Live it updates itself with camera locations as you drive, if someone ahead of you spots a scamera van and tags it you will be warned about it.
Coming off the A1M onto the A14 you could see those whose tomtom was warning them about the scamera van on the next bridge long before they saw it.
Similarly if you're the first to see one setting up you can tag it for people travelling behind you.
