while i was hard at work the other day, well news papers dont read themselves, i wonderd if there was no news papers, no news on tv, no news on radio, or interweb. would the world still opperate in the same way just by word of mouth.

You'd know what you wanted or needed to know. You'd find your own "news" instead of being spoon-fed a load of crap.

It could be predicted fairly well.

There's still a war in Iraq.

We're still getting raped by taxes.

We're still America's b**ch.

There's still a man in a white coat somewhere describing the universe as "Like a greenhouse"

The rest would be local news, that would be spread by word of mouth, that would actually be relevant. At the end of the day, no news or lots of news, BBC and ITV still have to fill 4 hours each morning. Word of mouth only spreads the important stuff.

To be fair to Nolar, living in the North of England as she does, she probably remembers what it was like with no TV and radio. Newspapers were stuck on walls in communal areas for those who could read.

Probably a great sense of community.

They'd still be news, but it'll be compiled into a big book - probably twisted into a religious script - and will be used as the basis of millions of followers to follow.

2000 years ago, in a pub just outside Jerusalem:-
"Did you hear that bloke Jesus was stuck on that cross for being a crazy man?"
"No way!"
"Yep. Nearly killed him"

Same story told and retold over many years:-
"That Jesus bloke rose from the dead, is the son of god, he is our saviour. Praise the lord. hallelujah!!"

Should have called it "Jewish whispers". smile

If we were living in mud huts, there was no global trade and international travel it mat be the case. A modern society would not function without news.

i have just rememberd something from reading the posts from you good people. i think most of you will have heard of a film that came out a few years ago called LOCAL HERO, with Burt Lancaster in. well that is a fav film of mine and i always said one day i will visit where it was mostly made. anyway a few years back i finaly did, but there was no where in the actual village to stay at the time, so i stayed just along the coast in a place called Gardenstown. in the village they have a small visitor centre, you know the thing, few old photos and bits and bobs from its past. anyway i got talking to some of the locals who were getting on in years and happend to say that most of the people i spoke to around the village wernt scotish but people who had moved there from england or like me just visitors. they told me that years ago each village was a self contained community with everything they needed there, so never travelled far from home. slowly over the years each village developed its own language, so a village 5 miles along from another would speak a different language. it was fun listening to a few of the old locals talking in the old language they still used. they tried to teach me a few phrases but they fell on deaf ears sadly.

I live not that far away from Gardenstown, i find it quite uneasy there for some reason.

Read! Read? You don't know you're born. biggrin

I've heard there's a chance we might get some of this new-fangled Perrier water. But the cobbles on't th'M62 shek bubbles outta'vum.

Maybe (with hindsight) we need some news. Just not all the constant "streaming" of (mostly) non-news that we have.

Just had a thought - did the whole z-list celebrity, big brother culture come about because the whole streaming/online/24hr channel news thing really doesn't have *enough* news to report?

I can see how this would happen. "No wars or disasters today. Hmm, stick some vacuous tart on the cover and we'll run that instead"

I would guess the rise of the Hello/Chat/Now/Heat brigade happened because of the nations obession with the cult of celebrity rather than causing it...

News programs would be good, if they simply kept to the facts and left out the political bias and the sensationalism, the opinion and the time filler gossip.

But then news media is a business, that has to sell itself, and good news doesn't sell newspapers.

As long as the Telegraph continued to publish one sheet of paper with their crossword on it, I doubt I'd miss "the news".
