Floyd the 13 week old poodle is settling in well, and although he is showing a few signs of anquish as he has been separated from a very rowdy first few weeks with hens, horses, goats, and of course his brothers and sisters, he is quite reluctant to eat James wellbeloved puppy food.
He is 2kg underweight at present.
Any suggestions for a good, easy to eat puppy food?

My puppy is on Symply, he is doing very well on it. Have you tried mixing some low salt gray, or a bit of chappie into his food?

I tried the gravy idea, but he just licked it off the biscuits!!
Will try the meat though, just wondered if there was a better all in one dried food than the wellbeloved

Try one of the Royal Canin or Hills varieties for the size, weight and age he is, even soaking the food can make it more appealing. Try to avoid meat as its like trying to get kids to thrive on sweets, easy to get into them but no good on its own. The complete diets are very well balanced, but some dogs don't like them and sulk until they get what they want rather than what they need. If you need a specific type of the foods mentioned, I'll have to go and get the catalogue as ther are so many types. Should be available from your vet or good pet stores. Who says he's 2kg underweight anyway?

My Nan used to have to soak the biscuits in warm water, until they turned into mush, maybe trying that with a bit of the gravy mixed in might work.

I took him to the, er vet yesterday- all fine with the exception of the weight, hence the request to get him onto something to bulk him out a little. We are back in a week to see how he is getting on, but struggling to get him to eat at present.
Advice taken on board though with thanks

I use to deal with this company a few years ago and they use the same manufacturer who makes james wellbeloved (Golden Acres Pet Food) they are more than willing to help you over the phone.

Hi Mate,

Unusual fro a dog not to like James Wellbeloved, but hey...

I've just switched to Fish4Dogs for all our 5 adults and 2 puppies and no problems getting them to eat it at all.

Try some cod liver oil on the dried food.

You can purchase these specially for dogs which are excellent for their coats too.

Had some issues with my puppy when we first turned her to dried food but with the added oil, she lapped the whole dinner down

Is it dried food only? Is he eating all his food or leaving some?

It's James wellbeloved puppy- dry only but has been mixed with water or egg to encourage him, as he wouldn't touch it without.
I didn't get a puppy pack with him- not ideal I know- and the food he was on was less than fantastic- a jumbo sack full of various coloured biscuit and pig skin.
He has in fairness eaten a fair amount today- mixed with tuna, as stated earlier he is roughly 2kg underweight, so could use a bit putting on.
Hopefully it's just a lack of appetite due to pining- must be a big change for the little fella- and the hot weather, but really want to get him eating properly

It would still have been better to feed what breeders fed him to start then mixed in food of your choice to wean over.

My dog did not get on with JWB, I changed to Pro plan puppy, never looked back, been on it (adult now) for over 6yrs and looks fantastic. He eats it as though it's the first time he has had it every day!
Can get from e.g pets at home, hills or royal canin good alternatives (Arden grange which has been mentioned also seems to be a pretty good food).

Try not to add to many interesting foods (easier said than done I know) but quickest way to get a fussy eater esp if being picky.

I love the fact your vets said he was underweight yet don't appear to have given advice as to what to do about it!?

The vet advised to give Floyd 400g per day for now- as opposed 300 per day, until he gets weight on.
Alas, he can't make him eat the stuff though.

Fair enough, jwb isn't the nicest smelling puppy food out there (gave my dog the most awful wind!!) so if that wasn't the food his breeder gave him, change it to another make, however don't chop and chnage too many times too quickly!! another way to get a fussy puppy.

Too note when we took on Jimmy he was severly underweight, he did fantastically with pro plan puppy smile, his weight went on quickly but healthily.
