My first what car, not for me though.
My BIL. £30,000
Stuck between a S/C XKR or 996 C2
He does 20k miles.
Not overly worried about servicing etc
Currently has an Audi A8 4.2
You can get a 997 for that sort of money, I'd have that over the 996 as the interior looks much nicer IMO. My BIL. £30,000

Jag over both though, I'd imagine the supercharged engine would make motorway driving a doddle.
£30k is pushing it for a 997. IMO it's that weird money where it's a bit much for a 996 but as I said, not quite enough for a 997.
No point comparing an XKR with a 996 as they're two different types of car, but if he's looking at Porsche don't forget the Cayman S and Boxster S - lots of car for the money plus some left in the kitty.

Well unlike the post 2 above mine (at time of writing this) I would think that you can get some rather interesting, recent machinery for 30K
Here are a few suggestions that havent been mentioned so far (I think)
http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/1702445.htm
Slightly under budget, and I personally would prefer one to a 911... and perhaps a bit more "drivers car" than the xkr, depending on what your into.

May be a little boring compared to what your looking at, but is raved about by many, has a stonking engine and handling, and so may be worth a look, though of the beemers I personally would take the first.

Dont care about running costs too much you say
(ok its a bit older, but how could you not at least give it a look!)

Im guessing not really your thing, from looking at the cars youve mentioned, but I would be looking at one of these in that price bracket.

For the engine entirely!

Ok now perhaps im going a little crazy? But it has a mondeo V6 engine.... so it must be reliable right?

Ok. An SL55?
The 65 seems a smidge out of the price range. Sorry

SL55 AMG is hardly going to disappoint in performance or noise (far better than the Jag IMO). They look almost identical, and 99% of people wouldn't know the difference.
Since he's coming from an Audi A8, if he wants a bit of luxury and performance, how about a CL55 AMG (post 2003 for the supercharged engine).
Personally I wouldn't want to do 20k miles a year in any of the mentioned cars because fuel and maintenence will be ££££££££!

te. Would be lucky to get a warm eurobox coupe. However clutching £30k to spend on a classic would be a visit to the best candy shop you could ever imagine.
