Budget £5-£8k.

The rest of the criteria are up to you.

Maybe...

Best value
Best performance
Most practical
Whatever etc.

The V70 has to be in the list. Ticks one or two of those boxes.

That's rather yummy Mikey.

Any 'tales from the workshop' on these?

Given that estate cars are usually workhorses you can do a lot worse than a Mondeo - diesel of your mileage is high, or petrol otherwise. I have had two and the first (Mk1 TD on an 'N' plate) did 230,000 miles and the engine and transmission were fine when it was driven into and written off, and a 2002 TDDi now on 115,000 miles and (touch wood) still fine. They're good value, cheap to maintain, insure, and run, comfortable and well appointed if you have a Ghia or above, or moderately well appointed otherwise.

A bit too old for our workshop nowadays, the only real problem i can think of is the coolant pump for the supercharger & maybe the odd spot of rust...

Yup, D5 for 44mph and a nice 5 cylinder sound, T5 for decent performance and Q-car looks. I love 'em.
Not very fast is it?

Maybe you can save up a bit more?

But seriously - get a BMW 540.
