considering its worked really well for alot of other nations

should england be more open to the whole born in jamaica but played for england (john barnes) kinda thing?

germany pre-klinnsmann was a tired depleted squad but they've been hunting around getting players eligible for another country but choosing germany instead...

the french have previously been masters at this - especially from their former colonies - zidane, desailly etc

the germans have guys like klose, podolski, Aogo, Tasci, Boateng, Özil, Trochowski, Cacau

holland - Boulahrouz, Braafheid, Afellay, Elia, guillt, bogarde, davids, kluivert, rijkaard,

investment in the youth development but with attracting more possible young footballers from former colonies etc?

You don't need colonies - ask the Irish.

I think it would be a bit unfair on the world if we could have any player from all the colonies.

Most of the world are our colonies.

Shocking as we were, I can't think of any Irish players I'd want to ask...

I'm afraid you misnterpreted my comment. I wasn't suggesting that some Irish players might be eligible to plkay for England. What I was aluding to is the fact that the Republic of Ireland has been able to find eligible players who had never set fot in "the auld sod".

Ah yes, but we have the royal families from other countries, so surely we have their players and their colonies too.

Do you really want more players that don't give a st about the country they're playing for?

And of course the two Channel Islanders - Lesaux and Le Tisier. Not to mention Canadian Owen Hargreaves.

My irony register is depleted at the moment. It'll need a week to recharge.

I was under the impression that the French squad were all just sent home second class, much as our own deserve to be. To be slapped on arrival in both cases.

But, if we are aligning on national grounds for the teams, then your suggestion is rather dumb. What on Earth would be a national squad without any nationals?

10 out of the 11 Algerian side were actually French.

One of the German team has a brother who plays for Ghana.

I doubt that. Walking into Yo Sushi! doesn't make me Japanese.

Klose: Came to Germany when he was 8, went to school and learnt everything about football in Germany.
Podolski: Came to Germany when he was 2, for the rest, see above.
Cacau: Came to Germany somewhat ten years ago, changed citizenship years before he was even considered being a medicore player, just because Germany gave him and his family all the wealth they posses.
Marin: Came to Germany when he was 2, see above...
Trochowski: Came to Germany when he was 5, ...
Özil: Actually was born in Gelsenkirchen, Germany to turkish parents so had a doublecitizenship, was chased BIG time by the turkish football association, but chose the German squad even if it was ten times harder to get into the starting formation.
Khedira, Gomez, Jérôme Boateng, Tasci, Aogo: Born in Germany.

So as a German I feel we don't have a team of mercenaries but players who might be born somewhere else but know what they were given by this country and truely fight for our pride.

If you have some good kids from around the Commonwealth willing to play for England, give them a try, things can't get worse...
Still don't understand how a team with players the like of Rooney, Gerrard, Lampard, Terry, Ashley and Joe Cole can play as bad as they've done for most of the WC.
Seems the three lions need a straight cut and get rid of all the super stars who only play up or above peoples expectations when being paid millions by Russian billionairs and other shady sources of captial.
I know english people love football as much as Germans do, so there must be some real good kids out there in the streets.
