how much should it cost to replace one of these?

the car im looking it is very clean and priced at £3500.

it needs a new dephaser pulley and they said they would do it?

from what ive seen its a £700 job.

to me that doesnt make financial sense for the dealers point of view.

any thoughts?

They are utterly crap cars, however there were plenty of Mums who unwittingly bought them, so there will be plenty of others for sale, hopefully not requiring hundreds spending on them like this one. I'd look for another. Actually, I'd look for another type of car altogether. wink
this is what she wants (though im very open to alternatives)

there are plenty, but they are all abused (due to type of car)

this one is spotless, you could almost pass it off a under 3 months old.

like i say, the dealer (not renault) said they will fix it. but smells fishy to me as its such a big job.

Gotcha Homer, I'm still bitter than My Missus bought one (main dealer) without telling me first ! It was massively unreliable, dangerous in fact. OK, the dealer will fix the problem on this one, but what else is that problem hiding ? Why did the previous owner get rid ? Why haven't they already fixed it without telling you ? Too many ifs and buts to make this a sensible buy. Have a look on 'peach or lemon.com' if you need any more convincing about their reliability, esp at this age.

The same money will get you a bombproof Mazda Premacy, some are really well specced, they drive like a Mondeo, sorted. Have a look at one of those before parking with your money.

Good luck. smile
cheers fox!

i know they have issues with this, dashboards and elecy windows.

i noticed the windows only go down an inch at a time, are they meant to do this? (safety)

ill will try and convince her and look into premecys. i do like the jap idea.

Sounds like it has problems with the windows also.

Cambelt and asociated bits should be changed with the dephaser so make sure they do that as well although the schedule states the belts should have already been done (5yrs).

Windows: Renault cover 75% of the cost upto 7yrs old and 100k miles

Dash: Renault cover the majority of the cost leaving you with £100 to pay providing it is a Scenic 2 (2004 +)

Do not buy a Renault Scenic...especially the 1.6 VVT which you're obviously considering.
Unless you're an extremely competent DIY mechanic, your car will be a money pit.

If it has the electric parking brake, it WILL fail, and you're looking £200 for the module from a breakers. Which may or may not work. When it fails you not only lose parking brake, but the dash will show nothing but an error message, no speedo, no fuel gauage, no nothing. Also the rear brake discs which will get eaten by the dodgy handbrake incluse the ABS sensors and wheel bearing, so that's another fortune.

Scenics really are disposable. When they break, just bin them (as someone obviously already has done).

If I was looking to spend ~£3500 on an MPV, I'd be looking at these: http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2010...

I've just cut my losses and got rid of the mrs's 51 plate 1.6 scenic after a pulley on the timing belt collapsed, taking all the exhaust valves with it and leaving me stranded.
It had just had a new belt before we bought it less than a year ago because the last one failed also taking the valves with it. After 2 months the cat failed. 6 weeks before I got rid the driveshaft coupler failed leaving me stranded at a set of lights in the middle of town.
They are wallowy and gutless almost to the point of being unsafe. The one time I took it on holiday with 5 people in and luggage I could barely get it to do 60 mph.
Worst car I've ever bought.

Dunno, our is petrol.

Our Scenic had window failure, water pump failure, suspension failure, electrical faults galore, rust everywhere (yes, really), nearly every bit of trim fell off/broke, gearbox failure, it drank oil, sunroof leaked, doorseals fell off, overheated, wouldn't start half the time, it wallowed like a hippo and was hated from day 1 until the day we got <10% of what we paid for it. Heap of sh*t. The Renault (main) dealer was a and didn't care.

The Premacy, on the other hand, has been faultless and is actually rather pleasant to drive too (no, I don't work for Mazda). Here's one for £2500 for example - http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/2002-MAZDA-PREMACY-SPORT-BLA...
I really like that Mazda, what a lot of car for £2,500!

mate had 2 meganes, mk 1 of the fat ass megane had a few minor electrical problems but he liked it and traded it in for the face lifted model when it came out. He had the dephaser "kit" replaced 3 times (£900 a time according to the paperwork left in the car once) & a couple of window motors replaced under warranty in 2 years so chopped it in for a toyota as soon as he could.

Wife had a 1.6 Grand Scenic.

Ignition coil went twice.

Window went down by it's self and then wouldn't go up again.

Electronic handbrake went.

Battery constantly went flat, despite two replacements.

Got rid when faced with a 2k bill just to get it through it's MOT.

Plus it was the worst car I've ever had the displeasure to drive, and sloooow.

Given the bad press these things have had for years and years now, I simply cannot believe people still buy them.

Terribly unreliable and poorly built cars with a whole host of common problems, most of them big money..

I had a scenic as a hire car in Nice in 2004, I thought at the time that the parking brake was just a problem for the future but it was a novelty at the time.
It was a 1.5d which was slow and had poor fuel economy, although the electric fuel gauge meant that I didn't have to fill it up at the end of the hire as it still looked full!

Strangely I sell loads of these and we hardly get any trouble with them. I have replaced dephasers, had a couple of dash pods refurbed, and also electric window packs. We used to do a fair few coil packs in the older models.

I do however think it is internet fantasy to say they are *all* terrible and always go wrong. It simply isn't true. I have plenty that don't cause their owners any trouble at all, in fact they come back and buy the same model again often times.

I would also point out the rustiest cars I have ever come across are 100% Mazdas every time! (with the exception of the Ford KA)

After someone wrote off my first car, I wanted something bigger to transport kids/camping stuff etc in and saw a very very nice almost black (but was actually a lovely metallic green) Maxda premacy 2.0l sport and like a muppet I waited until the next day to put my deposit down. By lunchtime the next day I was just about to leave to give the guy payment in full & driver it back, I found out he 'sold' it (although I think he just got the factory fit dvd player in the back fixed and relisted it on Autotrader for more £££). Still kicking myself about that.

I looked at Picasso's, I looked at Scenics and they were all grotty and abused. Coupled with the amount of horror stories, I couldn't take the risk on a money pit, so ended up with a Nissan Almera Tino SE+ which is chain driven (the Scenics were all belt driven) and aside from replacing all the consumable items and putting it through a full service it's been fine.

It aint the most inspiring drive for sure, but it does what it says on the tin and can carry a load of crap, and a family of 5 pretty comfortably and still has all the cubby holes/power point in the back etc that the Scenics have.

Doesn't the Scenic have the stupid foot handbrake too?

Guy in work has a Premacy (or is it MPV) and is very happy. Our Mazda 5 was also a very reliable car.

It is electronic like VW/Audi, Jag, Citroen, etc, etc. It is not operated by your foot.
