Hi All,

Long term lurker, first time poster!

I've just had an odd phone call from my insurer (not sure if I can name them but it's the one in the naval uniform with a parrot on his shoulder). They started with the usual stuff, asking to confirm DOB etc which I declined as they were the ones to call me. They provided me with some additional info that made me confident that it was in fact them.

The reason for the call, it transpires, is that they 'think' they have a duplicate registration on their records for mine and want me to post them my V5 as proof of ownership. I've never heard of this being asked for before and it set alarms bells off in my head that maybe it was indeed a dodgy call after all.

I've told them that I'm not doing anything until I get something in writing, but in the mean time have any of you out there in PHland been asked to do this before?

Many thanks

Koofler

Sounds bloody dodgy to me.

If they had reason to suspect a cloned car they should get in contact with the Police/DVLA I'd have thought.

Surely just look at the address they asked you to post it to and see if it;s one of their official ones?

Is there a chance your car is dodgy? Did you buy it cheap, noticed anything odd with the id marks etc since owning it? Have you HPI'd your own car to check it ties up?

I thought it sounded iffy at first, but they confirmed information that would only be available to someone who has access to the policy details (i.e. additional drivers etc).

I'll call them tonight when I get home and find out what the score is.

Ah! If only I'd seen through the flaw in their cunning disguise! :-)

I hate this! I had a call from my bank (Four letters, Chinese) the conversation went something along the lines of:

BANK > "Can I speak to MR XXX"
ME > "Speaking"
BANK > "I'm calling from XXX, I would like to talk about your account but before I can I need your security password, to confirm I'm from XXXX I will give you your postcode and DOB"
ME > "Seriously? You expect me to give you MY bank security details after you called me?"
BANK > "I'm from XXXX and your posted and dob are..."
ME > "Whats my name again?"
BANK > "Sorry?"
ME > "Who am I?"
BANK > "Mr XXXX?"
ME > "You confirmed this how?"
BANK > "... " < Silence
ME > "so you rang me gave someone who says they are Mr XXXX MY sensitive information without any confirmation of who they are and now want my security details? SERIOUSLY (slightly raised voice)"
BANK > "If you would to change the way XXXX contact you in future I can do that sir."
ME > "Let me guess I need to give you my security details for you to do that?"
BANK > "Erm..."
ME > HUNG Up.

Complete and utter joke.

Sounds fishy to me. Maybe stolen details? Why ask you to post the V5? Surely a fax is proof you have it? If they have a duplicate car registered the same then they need to inform the Police??

I got a call from 'Admiral' the other day, asking about the crash i had recently on my Aprilia RS125.

I don't have a bike. I don't even have a bike licence. But they seemed to know enough about me.
The ambient noise in the background (of other call center staff etc) was a little bit too high for me to believe it.

Personally i think it was a scam of some kind, trying to get details off me. I just hung up and have heard nothing since.

Reminds me of a bit from The real hustle where they pretend to be from a call center using recorded background noise.

anyone like this rings, just ask for a number and you'll call them back.

google the number to check it.

but then ring normal customer services.

No idea if this could be accurate... but who's name is on the V5? Are you a named driver on the policy?

Could suspect fronting (no idea if this applies though!)

So....

Eventually spoke to a call centre jockey last night and the call I had received was legit. They wanted to confirm my vehicle details, even though they gave ME the very same details to confirm their identity when they called me!

When I pushed them over why they had asked for the V5 they were unable to give a reasonable answer (perhaps lost in translation to English?) so I'll email Customer Services for an explanation.

Thanks all for your input,

Koofler beer

i have had this (but i think they've changed how they do it now)

anyway the woman got all shirty and told me that they'd written to me to tell me it's the new policy.

so i told her that indeed they had and i thought it was ridiculous when i read it too!.

all you need to do is call them on the number on your card though. they then know why the other person was calling. it's quite good in that respect but it's barking that you're supposed to believe them when they phone up!

Nope. It's a cockatoo (Cacatuidae), which is a sub-order of Parrots (Psittaciformes). They are distinct from parrots in that they do not exhibit green pigments in their feathers like true parrots (psittacines).
